The St. Louis Blues and San Jose Sharks collide tonight in a highly anticipated Western Conference showdown. Here is our NHL betting preview complete with NHL picks.

St. Louis Blues (42-22-9)
The St. Louis Blues are flush off a commanding 3-0 victory over the hapless Vancouver Canucks on Saturday night. The shutout at Rogers Arena marked the second consecutive road win by the Blues over the Canucks this season (they won 4-3 on Oct. 16), and serves as an intriguing precursor to their upcoming date in St. Louis on Friday.

Before the Canucks and Blues renew hostilities though the Blues descend on the Shark Tank where they’ll be hoping to wrap up a five-game road stretch on a positive note. They began with 5-4 win over Dallas in overtime, but lost back-to-back games with a 7-4 loss at Calgary and a 6-4 loss at Edmonton. Returning to winning form in Vancouver was imperative on Saturday, if they were to salvage what was left of their five-game road trip. Indeed, the Blues were matched as the massive road favorites when markets opened, anywhere from -174 NHL odds or higher at the expense of the Canucks. By closing doors, they were locked in at a high of -190 at Bovada. High those prices might have been, the Blues were the consensus NHL pick across most sports betting markets nevertheless. Inasmuch as the Blues are enjoying a solid season, the Vancouver’s woeful season and blunt home form conspired mainly against the hosts.

The Blues take a 7-3-0 mark in their last ten games to San Jose. They are also 7-3-0 in their last ten road games. On the season, they are a solid 42-22-9, which includes a balanced form both home (21-11-4) and away (21-11-5). By the stats, the Blues stack up rather well. But so do the Sharks. As such, the Blues are the nominal road underdogs in this game at +115 to +120 NHL odds to win straight up (the NHL Odds vary only slightly from sportsbook to sportsbook).

San Jose Sharks (41-25-6)
The San Jose Sharks are riding a two-game winning streak into tonight’s date with the high-flying St. Louis Blues, who are giving Dallas and Chicago a run for their money in the Central Division standings. Good form and momentum has the Sharks firmly installed as the favorites on the NHL odds board, but they can’t be taking anything for granted and neither can NHL bettors.

Markets opened with the Sharks at -135 to win outright in money line betting markets, but with game time fast approaching the NHL odds are hopping furiously and, in some cases, going against the home favorites. At the time of writing, the Sharks are down to -130 at Pinnacle and 5Dimes but up to -140 at Bet365 amongst several others. That has a lot to do with consensus betting polls that reveal 62% of the public is backing the Blues on their NHL picks to mastermind the upset.

While the Sharks are a solid 41-25-6 on the season and making a concentrated push for the playoffs down the stretch, they are just a so-so 16-15-3 at home. It’s a surprising stat, by all accounts, and definitely home ice is not what it’s typically cracked up to be. Yet, they are riding a four-game winning streak at home that includes a 5-2 win over Washington Capitals, 3-2 win over Boston Bruins, 4-1 win over NY Rangers and a 3-0 win over Arizona Coyotes, and that’s nothing to scoff at.  Most importantly, this is the third game between of the season between the Sharks and Blues, with the former winning both previous meetings on the road 3-1 and 6-3.

NHL Betting Verdict
On paper, this is a well-matched game between two outfits that are riding solid form and the momentum of a concentrated playoff push down the stretch. It’s arguable, therefore, the angles for profit can be found on both sides of the coin. The Sharks should win with home-ice advantage, but the Blues could win too. It’s a total tossup, really.

For our money, we’re going with the latter and shading the Blues on our NHL picks at the tempting +120 price at 5Dimes. They’ve lost twice to the Sharks and rather badly (outscored 9-4 combined in St. Louis), so there’s a good chance they’ll be looking to avoid the sweep at the Shark Tank tonight and get the job done.
