Just the one game on the ice Monday night as Tampa Bay visits Atlantic Division rival Detroit. The two are tied atop the Atlantic on eight points with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Year to date record: (7-3-2, +5.25 units)

Tampa Bay Lightning at Detroit Red Wings

I think Sunday was the first time I felt like I was just on the wrong side when the New York Islanders just weren’t a factor in the first period against the L.A. Kings. Their seven total shots couldn’t overcome a Anze Kopitar goal at the 12:44 mark, sending my followers to a rare defeat. Nothing to worry about considering we’re playing with house money at this point, but the goal is to get to the +10 unit mark as soon as possible, then we can really relax for a knowing the ultimate goal is to make sure the season provides a profit.

BTW, I had the chance to check out three NHL games in two cities this weekend starting with the Detroit Red Wings in Vegas on Friday. Then it was off to Glendale, Ariz., to watch the Coyotes and Boston Bruins from Gila River Arena, an arena this is fantastic if you get the chance to visit. I washed the weekend down hustling back to Vegas for the Bruins and Golden Knights on Sunday.

I like to be selective in the games that I wager on, but when you find that there is only one game on the schedule that means your game has been chosen for you. Sometimes that leaves you handicapping the total because the game is a complete mismatch; thankfully, tonight is not the case as we have a pretty good clash between the Red Wings and the Tampa Bay Lightning. Puck drops at Little Caesars Arena at 7:30 ET. The Lightning are a manageable -120 road favorite, but it’s the 1st period that I have my eye on.

The best part of watching games live is you get a much better feel for a team's speed. The Wings caught my eye against Vegas, which isn’t the best barometer considering their lack of speed, but I made a mental note that Detroit's wingers are fast enough to create chances on a consistent basis. You may look at each team’s shots on goal output and think that this game is a definite ‘under’ but you have to look further to notice that when both teams do get shots on that they of quality.

My advice is to jump on this number early because I think bettors will bet the first period over as they’re doing with the game total.

From a trend perspective, there is a small trend developing between these two teams with three of their last five meetings cashing ‘over’ tickets with a push. A larger sample trend has formed with 6 of Tampa’s last 7 games going over the total, including a 6-0 trend against the Eastern Conference. These aren’t numbers that pertain directly to the first period but it does give confidence that we’ll be pointed in the right direction.
