NHL bettors be aware: the Edmonton Oilers actually won a game! They took care of the Lightning on Monday, but are still big home dog on Wednesday as the Washington Capitals visit.

The Washington Capitals Can Win Because…
They’re the significantly better team. The Oilers are coming off a win because they caught the Lightning in a tough road situation. Tampa Bay is on the opposite coast, doing a road trip in Canada with three road games in four nights. Washington will be far fresher for this game.

The Oilers are coming off a win but lost the first five games of the season before that. They have allowed an average of 4.5 goals per game this season, which is horrendous. Alex Ovechkin and company should be licking their chops.

Braden Holtby has a good track record against the Oil Can and he should be between the pipes for this one. Holtby is 3-0-0 with a 1.00 GAA against the Oilers in three starts. His expected counterpart, Ben Scrivens, had a 3.53 GAA against Washington.

The Edmonton Oilers Can Win Because…
They finally got the monkey off of their back. The Oilers played well on Monday night, taking care of the Lightning and finally getting into the win column. They proved to themselves that they aren’t as bad as their start indicated and that they can in fact compete with the better teams in the league. They just need to duplicate that effort. They’ll ride that wave of confidence into this contest.

Outlook & Pick
The Capitals have won four of the last five meetings with Edmonton and shouldn’t have too much of a problem extending that streak. They opened as a -135 favorite on the NHL odds and I would only expect this line to climb. Even though Edmonton is coming off a win, they were absolutely brutal before that. At the same time, Washington has been quite reliable as they have yet to lose in regulation. They’ve averaged 3.6 goals per game and shouldn’t have too many problems exploiting a leaky Oilers defense. Lay the -135 with the Caps as one of tonight's NHL picks.
