Our resident NHL handicapping professional takes a look at the total in Friday’s game between the Islanders and Penguins. Join us to read his in depth look into that specific topic, and the betting preview article culminates with a selection on the total.

Focus on the Total in Friday Metropolitan Division Battle
The Pittsburgh Penguins will host the New York Islanders on Friday at 7:05 PM ET. Our area of concentration in this game will be placed on the total. According to the NHL betting odds at BetOnline, the posted total in this contest is 5.5. These Metropolitan Division rivals have seen nine of their previous thirteen meetings go over the total.

Islanders Goal Scoring Return
After going through an inexplicable goal scoring drought, the Islanders have regained their momentum in that regard during recent games. They’ve scored three goals or more in each of their previous four games, and saw three of those contests go over the total.  The Islanders are currently fourth in the NHL averaging 3.0 goals per game. They’re also averaging a stellar 33.7 shots on goal per game and that ranks second in the NHL. In addition, they’ve averaged a superb 3.7 goals scored per contest in twenty-eight games versus Metropolitan Division opponents.

Recent Power outage in Pittsburgh
The Pittsburgh Penguins power play has been terrific for the better part of the season, and currently ranks #9 in the NHL. However, they’ve lost four in a row, and the power play unit has failed them miserably during that time, going a dismal 1-for-11. The Penguins have been less than stellar on the defensive end of the ice in twenty-nine division games this season. In twenty-nine games versus Metropolitan Division opponents, Pittsburgh has allowed 3.3 goals per contest. In what’s become an all too familiar theme in Pittsburgh during recent seasons, the play of goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury has taken a turn for the worse at the most inopportune time.  Fleury has exhibited a chronic history of being a very good goaltender for most of the regular season, and then falling on his face when his team needs him most.

Final Analysis
These teams have a history of playing high scoring and entertaining games when facing each other. I’m of the opinion, the game tonight will be another in a long line of those types of affairs, and one of my NHL picks  on Friday will be indicative of just that.
