The New York Islanders made a big splash last week with their trade for center Bo Horvat. Hell play his first game for the Islanders on Monday in Philadelphia; read on for our best Islanders vs. Flyers pick based on the top NHL odds.

Horvat was having a career season at the time of the trade, scoring 31 goals in 49 games for Vancouver – and the Islanders can only hope that he'll add some finish to their stale offense.

The Islanders rank 25th with 2.82 goals per 60 minutes, and none of the teams ranked behind them are sitting in a playoff spot. The Isles are two points behind Pittsburgh for the second Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference, but New York has played three more games.

Even though the Flyers are four points behind the Islanders, they've posted an impressive 10-4-2 record since the holiday break.

Here is our best Islanders vs. Flyers NHL pick (odds via DraftKings Sportsbook; pick confidence based on a 1-to-5-star scale).

Islanders vs. Flyers pick

Flyers ML vs. Islanders (+110 via DraftKings)

While the Islanders made a big move to acquire Horvat and recently had shutdown defenseman Adam Pelech return from injury, it’s still fair to wonder whether this team is good enough to warrant being a road favorite in this game.

The Islanders and Flyers rank 23rd and 24th, respectively, when it comes to score-and-venue-adjusted expected goals during five-on-five play, and that has been trending up for Philadelphia.

Another point in the Flyers’ favor is that the Islanders are going with backup Semyon Varlamov. He is an excellent (even overqualified) backup goalie, but he is not as good as Ilya Sorokin, the Islanders’ No. 1 option in net.

The Flyers have a better chance to win the goaltending battle. Combined with their improving possession game, they should be able to take this game at home.

The three-star rating is due to the uncertainty of just how well Horvat will fit in with the Islanders immediately. He ought to be an upgrade for his new team, but when it comes to his first game, I’m uncertain whether or not Horvat will have immediate chemistry with Mathew Barzal, for example, or whether that takes a few games for them to get used to each other.

In any case, I like the Flyers to spoil Horvat's debut at plus money.

Three of our five top-rated sportsbooks have settled on the Flyers at +110 on the moneyline, with FanDuel pulling an extra couple of cents away from bettors, with a price of +108. Caesars is in their own world, with the Flyers as underdogs, but at -105.

That Caesars line is closer to my value on the game, but that’s why the +110 is the preferred price.
