Get an update on overall NHL Betting trends and read why the Islanders/ Capitals 'total' is trying to tell you something in tonight's hockey action.

With a win tonight my players will establish a new bankroll high as the Boston Bruins cashed our +126 ticket last night with a huge victory over the Montreal Canadiens. Although the NHL schedule offers a large amount of games I don't see any sides that I want to pull the trigger on so we'll look for a 'total' to get us the money tonight.

Betting Trends

Before I get to my analysis let's update the overall betting numbers.

Home favorites continue to dominate the leagues betting landscape as they've cashed almost 65% of the time (203-82-15-14).

Home teams, in general, have faired well whether they were favorites or dogs as bettors have won just under 61% of their wagers (262-128-24-16). The only issue with a player just betting home favorites is too often you're asked to lay too much.  For instance, last night the Detroit Redwings were an easy winner, 7-0, over the Arizona Coyotes but even though Penguins backers won their bet they were being asked to wager $330 just to win $100.  That's no the responsible way to manage your bankroll. Even with the win, a $100 wager would have only given you a return of $30.30.  We have already seen -300 favorites lose this season so let's keep our options below -150.

Bettors that like to play the puck-line have found success supporting home underdogs, meaning they are getting +1.5 goals to start the game.  73% of all home dogs have cashed tickets this season with all 'dogs covering the PL at a 69% clip.

'Under's' continue to be a wise choice after the first month as just under 54% of all games this season have hit the 'under'.

Washington Capitals vs N.Y. Islanders

The Washington Capitals travel to the Barclay's Center to take on the Islanders. This is going to be a mouthful but it's important to forget what you recently remember. We know the Islanders gave up six goals to the Columbus Blue Jackets Saturday after giving up four unanswered goals so we automatically are thinking this game against the Caps has to go 'over', especially with five being the number.

The Washington Capitals shutout the Vancouver Canucks, 3-0, while extending their winning streak to four games. The key to that win streak is how much better they seem to get defensively. This isn't a great offensive formula for an Islanders team who has a tendency to become a lethargic hockey team for large amounts of time. The bookmakers have offered an opinion on this as you would usually see a 5.5. I'll take their opinion for my NHL pick as the Capitals will suffocate New York.
