NHL Pick: Panthers -170
Best Line Offered: at Heritage

Detroit Red Wings (25-17-8)
The Detroit Red Wings are riding high in the Atlantic Division, sat third with a 25-17-8 mark and 58 points. However, they are seven points adrift of the division’s standard Florida Panthers, a fact that puts a heavy premium on the win in the clash between this pair tonight. It’s also one of the main reasons why the Red Wings enter this game at the severe disadvantage on the NHL odds board, trading anywhere from +155 to +165 to win straight up depending on your choice sportsbook.

Red Wings are coming off a 3-1 loss to Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday night that has them dropping to a 5-4-1 mark in their last ten games. In a quick turnaround, they’ll look to bounce back against the Panthers despite the NHL odds.

Earlier in the season, the Red Wings played the Panthers close but lost 2-1 in overtime in Detroit. That previous meeting augurs well as they look to draw level in the series. Recent form, however, has been up and down with the Red Wings oscillating between a win and loss in their last five games, which includes a win and loss on the road in their last two straight.

On the season, the Red Wings boast and 11-10-5 record at home and a slightly better 14-7-3 record on the road. Where they’ve been most vulnerable is on the defensive side of the puck – they’ve scored 123 but conceded 127 for a negative 4-point differential.

Florida Panthers (30-15-5)
Jaromir Jagr and the Florida Panthers are enjoying a standout season that has them atop the Atlantic Division standings with an impressive 30-15-5 record and second in the Eastern Conference behind Washington Capitals, albeit nine points adrift.

Recent form is underscored by a four-game winning streak has them improving to 6-3-1 in their last ten games. Importantly, they clinched a noteworthy 5-2 win over the Washington Capitals on Tuesday Night in the nation’s capital. Prior to that they beat Chicago 4-0, Tampa Bay 5-2and Toronto 5-1.

Where the Panthers are most impressive is on the defensive side of the puck where they are first in the league in goals against. Clearly, they aren’t too shabby on the offensive side either, if their recent run of form where any indication with 19 goals scored and just five conceded.

Florida are tough to beat at home – they are 16-7-2 in domestic play and they are the third highest scoring side in their division and tenth overall highest scoring side in the league with 140 goals scored.

NHL Betting Verdict
It comes as no surprise that the Florida Panthers are considerable home favorites in this game, trading anywhere from -170 (Heritage) to -180 (The Greek) to win straight up. Indeed, it would take a ballsy NHL bettor to go against the Panthers at home. Of course, the Red Wings aren’t a side that should be underestimated but recent form has been patchy at best and that doesn’t augur well against the Atlantic standard, especially on the road. We’re taking the Panthers to win straight up on our NHL picks.
