Our NHL betting odds guru examines the game today between the Carolina Hurricanes and the Los Angeles Kings. Take the time to read this insightful NHL betting preview article on this contest which includes a free pick.

NHL Alert: Hurricanes entering the Staples Center
The Kings will host the Hurricanes at the Staples Center in Los Angeles with the opening face-off slated for 10:35 PM ET. According to the NHL betting odds at Bookmaker, the Kings are a -210 money line favorite, and the posted total is 5.0. The puck-line at BetOnline has the Kings -1.5 (+145) and the Hurricanes +1.5 (-165). These teams met once this season in Raleigh, Carolina, and the Hurricanes skated away with a 3-2 win. The Kings won both regular season games versus Carolina a season ago by scores of 2-1 and 3-1.

The Probable Starting Goaltenders
In all likelihood we’ll see Cam Ward between the pipes for Carolina, and it will be Jonathan Quick in goal for the Kings. Between these two goaltenders they’ve amassed 3 Stanley Cup winning rings. Ward has struggled on the road this season, going 2-3 in 5-starts, and compiling an awful .866 save percentage. Quick has been terrific at home, going 8-2, and putting together a superb .954 save percentage in the process of doing so.

Trying to get back in the Mix
The Carolina Hurricanes began the season by losing their first 8-games. Since then they’ve won 6 of their last 10, and still have an uphill climb in order to make them relevant again in the Eastern Conference. They’re coming off a 6-4 road loss at Dallas on Tuesday which enabled them to snap a 3-game losing streak, and also broke a string of 4 consecutive contests going under the total. Despite the win at Dallas, the Canes are a miserable 2-8 on the road, and have allowed a whopping average of 3.7 goals per game.

Kings of their Castle
The Los Angeles Kings began the season with a 4-0 home loss to San Jose. Since then, they’ve won 9 of their last 11-games at the Staples Center. This will be the finale of a 4-game in 8-day home stand for the Kings, and they’re coming off 2 straight wins over Anaheim and Florida. Unfortunately, they opened the home stand with a 2-0 loss to the Dallas Stars. Despite being shutout in that game, they’ve scored 18-goals combined over the last 5-games, and scored 5-goals or more on 3 occasions during that sequence.

Final Analysis
The home and away splits of both teams are the polar opposites. There’s a huge disparity between these probable starting goaltenders tonight in terms of their home and away numbers. I’m looking for the Kings to close this home stand with a huge effort, and win this game in an emphatic fashion. I’m going to have a lean toward playing the home team on the puck-line for one of my NHL picks today.
