First, I have to offer my apology for not appearing on the ‘Ice Guys Show’ this morning. Sometimes, you have technical difficulties that can’t be anticipated. Thank you to Ian Cameron for getting my Best bet on the show but in case you missed it I was going to give out the Pittsburgh Penguins. Still a good price out there compared to the opening number of -145 but I would recommend that you jump on it now.

Today’s ‘Play of the day’ comes from the same Penguins, Islanders game with our focus going straight to this generous TOTAL.

You know how I feel about 6’s, you can imagine my happiness when I saw this number getting pounded up from the opening 6 to 6.5, I couldn’t resist. According to the SBR odds page, 60% of the total wagers have come in on the OVER, which indicates that both the public and professional bettors are on the OVER. Good for us.

Yes, I know Matt Murray is out for the Pens and Tristen Jarry is in. There is a perception that this is a big problem for Mike Sullivan’s team but I don’t agree. In fact, I think some of these injuries are a benefit if teams are able to overcome the loss. Pittsburgh isn’t feeling the Murray loss just yet with Jarry’s respectable 4-1-2 record with a shutout (Buffalo). Overall, his save percentage is a sensational .926 with a sparkling 2.30 GAA. He has three wins in his last four games where he had to make 33 or more saves to get the win so his wins have been earned. Jarry’s confidence level is escalating the same way Matt Murray’s did when he replaced Marc-Andre Fleury, slowly we gained confidence in him.

Pittsburgh defensemen Justin Shultz was placed on IR Thursday, a big blow to their second pairing but have we not watched this before. Last season Kris Letang was lost for the postseason and everyone started throwing dirt on Pittsburgh, forgetting to bury Pittsburgh’s ring finger. Matt Hunwick will likely take Shultz’s place on the right side after suffering a lower-body injury against the New York Rangers, Tuesday. Hunwick is an NHL veteran who will eat up minutes and block a ton of shots. I’m not saying that there isn’t a big drop off overall but there isn’t from a defensive perspective, which is all we care about tonight.

Despite all the injuries to the Pittsburgh defensive core, I don’t think they’ve been a train wreck especially with their pace of play, they could be giving up a lot more than 31.58 shots per night. The ducks, who has been crushed by injuries more than any team in the league, give up almost 37 shots a night to give it perspective.

When you have superstars like the Penguins they can help teams overcome injuries to their backend easier because they simply carry the puck more. Both teams like an up tempo pace which may make this an easy play to some but we’re jumping on the UNDER to cash another ticket.
