The Edmonton Oilers have a little bit of momentum right now and while it does nothing for them in terms of their hopes this season, it's helping them finish with some momentum to carry next season.
The Edmonton Oilers Can Win Because…
They’ve been playing relatively well of late. We’re being cautious to say it as the Oilers never really play well for any sustained period of time but they will carry a three-game winning streak into Wednesday night’s action – if you can believe that. Their offense has been playing really well this month as they’ve scored at least three in eight of their last nine games. In the month of March, they’ve averaged 3.23 goals per contest, which is actually the third-best number in the league. And while they’ve been mostly frail in net this season, they’ve done alright in their recent stretch, allowing just four goals in their last three games.
The challenge is that most of that damage was done at home and this game will be on the road at the Duck Pond. However, if the Oilers can carry their strong play over into this matchup, they might stand a fighting chance.
The Anaheim Ducks Can Win Because…
They’re playing great too and are gearing up for a playoff run. There’s a big difference that bettors have to realize about both of these teams and their respective hot streaks. The Ducks are the top team in the NHL with 105 points while the Oilers have 46 points less and are among the worst in the NHL.
Anaheim also comes into this game riding a three-game winning streak and they’ve won seven of nine, which you should keep in mind when placing your NHL picks. They have been getting the job done at the defensive end, allowing just five goals in their last three games. In each of their seven wins during the streak, they’ve held their opponent to two goals or less.
The Ducks have won all three meetings with the Oilers this season, five meetings in a row in Anaheim as well as nine of the last 11 overall. They dominate this series and it’s hard to see anything but a Ducks win in this spot.
Be careful laying a ton of juice here – or even the puck line – as the Ducks are back home playing their first game on the Duck Pond since their five-game east coast road trip. Sometimes teams come out a bit flat in their first game at home after a long road trip. So I’ll be staying away from both here.
While the Ducks should win this game, I’m going to go with the under. The under is 19-7 this season when the Ducks are at home with a total of 5.5 on the posted NHL betting odds, and it’s also 12-3 when the Ducks are playing on two-days’ rest. The under has also cashed in four of the last five meetings in Anaheim.
