Our resident NHL handicapping professional previews Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals between the Rangers and Lightning on Monday. Do you want to know how each of these teams has done in this exact situation during the 2014-2015 NHL campaign?

Game 2 of Eastern Conference Finals on Monday
The Rangers will host the Lightning on Monday at Madison Square Garden in New York. The opening puck drop for Game 2 of this Eastern Conference Final is slated for 8:05 PM ET. According to the NHL betting odds at Wagerweb, the Rangers are a -140 money line favorite, and the posted total is 4.5. The Rangers skated away with a 2-1 win during the series opener on Saturday, and the game easily stayed under the total of 5.0. That resulted was the polar opposite of what happened during the regular season between these teams. Tampa Bay won all three of those meetings, and each of those games went over the total.

Now Trending
The Tampa Bay Lightning is 9-2 over the total this season following a game in which they scored one goal or less. The Lightning is also 12-3 over the total this season following a game in which there was a combined three goals or less scored.

The Lightning are facing a Rangers team with a +0.68 goal per game differential this season. Tampa Bay has gone a dismal 0-9 against the money line this season when facing an opponent with a +0.65 or better goal per game differential. Granted they defeated the Rangers in all three of their regular season encounters. However, all three of those games took place prior to 12/2/2014 when the Rangers slow start kept them below that magic mark of +0.65.

The Rangers are coming off two consecutive wins by identical 2-1 scores. “The Blue Shirts” are a terrific 14-2 versus the money line this season following two straight games in which they scored two goals or less. As a matter of fact, the Rangers have seen six of their nine playoff wins come by scores of 2-1. They’ve also gone 9-1-1 under the total in their last eleven games during this 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Conference Finals Game 2 History indicated High Scoring
Since the 1996 Stanley Cup Playoffs, Game 2 of the Eastern and Western Conference Finals have gone 24-9-5 over the total, including 6-2 over since 2011.

The New York Rangers have gone under the total in each of their previous 2-games, and both of those contests ended in identical 2-1 scores. The Rangers are averaging 2.9 goals per game this season, and Tampa Bay is averaging 3.1 goals per contest. When combining those two results, and both teams goal scoring production, it qualifies for a totals betting angle that’s sustained the test of time.

Any home team (Rangers) with a total of 5.0 or less, coming off two or more games in a row that stayed under the total, and both team are averaging 2.9 or more goals per game on the season, resulted in the home team going 53-22 (70.7%) over the total since 1996; so go over with your NHL picks.

NHL Pick: Rangers and Lightning to go over the total of 4.5 at Wagerweb.
