The sportsbooks have trotted a half dozen NHL odds for us rink rats to peruse and see what we are willing to put down our money on this Friday. See inside for my top NHL picks for the night.

Even though we were 2-1 with our NHL picks yesterday, we broke even as my big money favorite Los Angeles let us down, somehow losing to Columbus. Let's forge ahead and try and knock down a trio of winners today at Heritage and put a chill into the oddsmakers.

Chicago Gets Defensive About Losing
After playing smart, somewhat conservative hockey, with the absence of defenseman Duncan Keith, Chicago has gotten scatter-brained on defense, which has seen them lose games they normally win.

The Blackhawks (7-6 SU) never mind getting into shootouts with opposing teams because they have ample fire power, but their 5-4 loss last Friday to Minnesota was a bit of an eye-brow raiser because of the score, but mostly forgotten because the Wild was playing with heavy revenge. However, two nights ago on home ice, Chicago was involved in another high scoring affair, holding a 5-3 over St. Louis in the second period, but was outscored 3-0 the rest of the way in defeat.

Having lost three of four, Chicago has to better on defense, giving up 16 goals in past four games, with goalie Corey Crawford not as sharp as he was early either.

New Jersey (6-6 SU) has lost four in a row to Chicago and takes on Hawks club that is 10-0 after surrendering five or more goals. The NHL odds have the Blackhawks at -135 for this game, which is good enough for me to back the road favorite for sports picks.

Dallas is Money These Days
The Stars have the most points in the Western Conference at 20 and are 10-3. Offensively, Dallas is doing mostly everything right. They rank third in goals scored at 3.54 a game, led Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin who are tied for the NHL lead in points at 20, and they rank first and third respectively in goals scored. As is the case with most offenses these days in hockey, often, part of the success comes from winning in special teams, and Dallas has the league's second-best power play at 29.5 percent conversion rate (13-44).

The Stars are in Carolina (5-7) for game three of a four-game road trip. The Hurricanes had their three-game winning streak snapped on Sunday by Tampa Bay, but coach Ron Francis remains optimistic, especially the way forward Kris Versteeg (10 points) and center Victor Rask (8 points) have been playing.

The issue for Carolina is trying to stay in games with their lack of offense. The Hurricanes are 26th in scoring at 2.2 goals a game, but have helped themselves by staying out bad situations by having the fewest penalty minutes.

With the Stars 11-1 away after two road contests, this hockey handicapper will play them at -135 for tonight's game.

Rangers the Choice In the Rockies
New York makes a quick two-night trip in the Mountain Time Zone, facing Colorado tonight and Arizona on Saturday. The Rangers (8-4 SU) for the second time this season are on a three-game winning streak and have not lost in regulation since Oct.15th in Montreal, giving them points in seven straight contests (5-0-2).

New York has outscored its past seven opponents 23-9 and allowed two goals or fewer in each game. Goalie Henrik Lundqvist has been in the net in five of those contests, has a 1.56 goals against average, and is the presumed starter tonight versus the Avalanche (4-9).

With Colorado's dismal start, this is a big game for them, because after this, they headed out on a franchise tying seven stop road trip. With the Avs 25th in defense, taking them at +135 is not a safe bet and besides, the Rangers are 39-15 against losing teams of late.
