The New York Rangers are a definitive favorite today but I'll tell you why the Lightning is the obvious choice with NHL odds at +129.

2016-17 NHL Record:  11-8   57.90%   +11.38 unitsTampa Bay Lightning vs N.Y. Rangers

The season rolls along with a big time Sunday tilt at Madison Square Garden between the New York Rangers and the Tampa Bay Lightning.

It's not often that you get the Lightning at a plus price but here it is.   I thought the public would be all over the Lightning because of backup Antti Raanta getting the start for New York.  That hasn't been the case as a small majority of tickets have been written in New York, driving the line up from an opening number of +118 to +129 in some spots.

I would jump on this now because it won't be long before there is buy-back money. Let's get into this game a little deeper but first here's an update on NHL betting trends to date.

Home teams are still dominating as they have now cashed 67.21% of the time (82-35-3-2) which could be a reason for the faith in the Rangers today.  If you're going to play this trend it appears as if Calgary is the only other option at +105 against Washington.  The other late options are too high of a price to lay.

If you want the +1.5 puck-line your bets are also cashing at a 67% pace but remember in order get the insurance you'll have to pay a large price.  Among the late games, not one offers +1.5 for less than -205 so I stay away.

There has been an incredible shift for 'total' players as the 'unders' have taken control the last week winning 53.15% of the time.  That doesn't seem like much but considering how large of an advantage that 'overs' had to start the season the turnaround has been incredible.

On to our game

On the outside, the Ranger / Lightning opening number seemed strange but I suppose now that Tampa has dropped two straight 3-1 games while scoring only one 1st period goal in eight games, the public wants to ride their cold streak.  Not us.

I expect the Lightning to come out dictating the pace in an effort to overcome their first-period demons. This is a big stage that Tampa doesn't want to be embarrassed on.

No official word on whether Nikita Kucherov will play for Tampa but even if he doesn't I'm banking on Ben Bishop to play better than his numbers have shown so far.

The Rangers, who lead the league in goals per game (3.63), need to show that they can score more grit goals in front of the net. Tampa will try and keep the Rangers to the perimeter today and if they can Ben Bishop will bring home the cash for you NHL pick.
