Minnesota Wild descend on the Ottawa Senators as the road favourites on the NHL odds board. Does the market have it right? Or will Ottawa upset the NHL betting odds?

Minnesota Wild (32-27-10)
Minnesota Wild picked themselves up at the weekend, beating the Montreal Canadiens 4-1 on the road to improve to 5-5 SU in their last ten games. The win saw them return to the win column after losing back-to-back games in St. Louis and Edmonton (both at home). In their second game in a three-game road trip that culminates in New Jersey, the Wild will be looking to build on the momentum, and it appears that the odds makers fancy their chances.

Wild enter the clash with the Ottawa Senators firmly favoured on the NHL odds boards. In fact, odds makers opened with the Wild at -125 at Pinnacle only for the public to bet them up to -133. They are found at a high of -135 as well at Bookmaker, William Hill and bet365, amongst several others.

While recent form stands modestly at 5-5 SU, they are 5-2 SU in fact in their last seven games, which is a very positive indication of form. This is the first meeting of two scheduled this season between this pair, so NHL bettors don’t have a reference for this particular matchup. However, given the Wild are holding one of two coveted wildcard playoff spots and desperate to pull ahead of the Colorado Wild, who are nipping at their heels, they won’t be short on incentive to win this game.

Ottawa Senators (32-20-8)
The Ottawa Senators are coming off a convincing 4-0 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday. How much take-away should NHL bettors take from that win is debatable when the Maple Leafs are propping up the league with a woeful 23-34-11 mark. To put it simply, a win over Toronto is hardly a ringing endorsement.

Case-and-point, the win over Toronto snapped a three-game losing streak and marked just their second win in the month of March. As it is, the Senators are merely 4-4-2 in their last ten games, which includes a 2-5 SU mark in their last seven games.

Overall, the prognosis isn’t favourable for the Senators as they are matched as the home underdogs at +120 across sports betting platforms. After opening at merely +105 on Bookmaker that’s a bit of a jump, most likely down to the betting action going against the hosts.

That said the Senators are 18-12-5 at home this season, which includes a 4-3 SU mark in their last seven home games. It’s not much to hang one’s hat on, but home ice advantage could prove a factor regardless of the market outlook.

NHL Betting Verdict
On paper, not much separates the pair – on the season, they are the Wild have 74 points while the Senators have 72 points. Form in the last ten games stands at a similar mark, but the Wild are clearly enjoying some momentum of late and that has them going into this game as the deserved favourites. Not to mention the fact that they are chasing a playoff spot while Senators, although Canada’s best hope for a playoff spot, are well off the mark in the Eastern Conference and highly unlikely to close the gap that is now seven points and steadily growing. Of course, the Senators could put a damper on the Wild’s bid – in that they do offer contrarian value for your NHL picks. But we just don’t see it. Take the Wild on your NHL picks to win straight up at the best price of -128 at Heritage.
