Free NHL Picks of the Day for Wednesday 11/19

There are just two games on the card for Wednesday night but we’ve handicapped both of them. While it’s a quiet night, there’s some good value here for NHL betting purposes.

Philadelphia Flyers vs. New York Rangers
Odds: Rangers -145
This is a tough matchup to handicap as both teams come into this meeting on losing streaks. The Rangers have lost three straight and seven of nine. They’ve also lost five of their last seven at home. As for the Flyers, they’ve lost two straight but they’ve had virtually no success at Madison Square Garden of late as they’ve dropped eight straight regular season meetings there. They’ve been outscored 31-9 in the process. Including playoffs, they have just one win there in their last 12 visits.

While the Rangers don’t have much of a home-ice advantage, the Flyers don’t exactly inspire much confidence playing on the road. They’ve dropped five of their last seven away games.

Picking a side seems a bit tricky as there’s no real edge. The Rangers seems to be in a bigger slump than the Flyers, so the slight lean is to the Flyers because of the NHL odds. However, it’s hard to bet them given their history at MSG.

Instead, we’ll go with the over. Steve Mason should be in net for the Flyers and he has an 0-3-0 record with a 3.35 GAA on the road this season. He’s lost all four of his starts at MSG while posting a 3.44 GAA. While the Flyers are among the worst defensive teams in the NHL (3.19 goals per game), they do tend to score a lot. As for the Rangers, they’re giving up a surprisingly high amount at 3.00 per game, which is a huge drop-off from the 2.32 they allowed last season (which was one of the best numbers in the league). That being the case, go with the over for NHL betting purposes.

Vancouver Canucks vs. Edmonton Oilers
Odds: Canucks -140
The Canucks have been off for four days but return to action on Wednesday when they face the hapless Oilers. Edmonton has lost three straight and seven of nine. One of those losses was at home to these very same Canucks. That’s actually the third time these two teams have faced off this season and the Canucks have taken all three meetings. Is there really any case to be made for the Oilers here?

Ryan Miller loves facing the Oilers as he’s never lost to them. He’s a perfect 10-0 with a 1.79 GAA against them. He’s even better in Edmonton, posting a 1.40 GAA in his five starts there while stopping 78 of 84 shots.

Compounding the problems is the fact that the Oilers aren’t scoring much. They’ve lost four straight at home and scored just seven goals in the process. They have still yet to be a Western Conference team this season (0-8) and there isn’t much of a case to be made for them here. Take the Canucks as they should win a low-scoring affair here.

NHL Pick: Canucks -140 & Under 5.5 at 5Dimes
