Quiet day in the NHL with just 4 games on the card. Some of the league’s worst teams are in action as Buffalo, Edmonton, Toronto & Arizona will be suiting up. Here’s our NHL picks for the night.
Washington Capitals vs. Buffalo Sabres
The Washington Capitals are a massive NHL betting odds favorite in Buffalo, which is to be expected. The Sabres are in the midst of another losing streak – surprise, surprise – having lost six in a row. Their offense has – again – disappeared as they’ve scored just six goals in their last five games. One of those losses was in fact to the Capitals. So far this season, the Sabres have faced the Capitals twice and have scored just three goals in those contests.
Under looks like the best play in this once as I don’t want to lay a ton of juice with a Caps team that has only been so-so of late. They’ve had some issues with offense too, so I’m expecting to see a low-scoring affair in this one.
NHL Pick: Take the Under at Bodog
Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Edmonton Oilers
Odds: Oilers -130
How embarrassing is it for the Toronto Maple Leafs that they’re actually an underdog to the Edmonton Oilers? That about says it all as these are two of the worst teams in the NHL. Both are vying for the top pick in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. Toronto has lost seven of nine while Edmonton has lost seven straight. In other words, this is a pick your own poison type of game.
I’m going to roll with the Maple Leafs as I still view them as the better of the few teams – even if it’s by a small margin. Edmonton is giving up goals in bunches these days as they’ve allowed 30 goals in six games in March. They’ve allowed at least five goals in five of their last six. Toronto has defensive issues of their own and over might be a smart play here too, but I’m just going to stick with the Maple Leafs as a road dog in this spot. Seeing Edmonton -130 just looks crazy to me.
NHL Pick: Maple Leafs +110 at The Greek
Arizona Coyotes vs. Los Angeles Kings
Odds: Kings -330
There is no scenario where you can take the Coyotes in this spot. This is a team that’s a complete mess and has in fact lost 14 of their last 15 games. They have scored one goal or less in six of their last seven games, so they’re not even competing on most nights. On Monday, they’re visiting a Los Angeles Kings team that has won four of six with their only two defeats being one-goal shortcomings to Nashville and to Pittsburgh. Goaltender Jonathan Quick is playing some of his best hockey of the season as he’s allowed just five goals in his last four outings.
Since the juice is so crazy in this spot, I’ll look for the puckline as my NHL pick and lay the -1.5 with Los Angeles. They should get the job done here and we’ll lay the extra puck because Arizona is so lifeless.
