The Washington Capitals take on the New Jersey Devils tonight on the road. Take a look at our NHL betting preview and choice NHL picks for this game.

Washington Capitals
The Washington Capitals have clinched the best record in the Eastern Conference. Although a couple of weeks of the regular season are yet to be decided, their already untouchable behind a 52-15-5 record on the season and 109 points – a mark that includes 48 regulation and Overtime wins, 4 shootout wins and one shootout loss.

It’s been a banner season for the Capitals with both home and road form standing on impressive deposits: 28-6-2 at home and 24-9-3 on the road. The are top of the entire league in the standings, highlighted by key stats such as second in the league on goals per game (3.2) and fourth in goals against (2.3). As well, they are second in power play percentage (23.2) and fourth in penalty kill (84.3).

Most recently, the Capitals are coming off a win that has them improving to a 6-3-1 record in their last ten games. They beat the Ottawa Senators 4-2 on Tuesday in the Canadian capital, bouncing back into the win column after taking a hefty loss to the Penguins in Pittsburgh (6-2) on Sunday.

In their last ten road games, their form has been modest and stands at a 5-5 SU record. They have taken on some tough teams though on the road, including defending champions Chicago Blackhawks, Los Angeles Kings and San Jose Sharks, to name a few.

The Capitals opened the season with a 5-3 win over the Devils. They took the second meeting 3-2 in a shootout at New Jersey and the third meeting 4-3 in the nation’s capital. They’ll be looking to sweep the series tonight with a fourth straight win and if the NHL odds were any indication they are a solid bet to do just that at -170 at 5Dimes (currently, at the time of writing, the best price on the NHL odds board).

New Jersey Devils
The New Jersey Devils are riding a two-game winning streak into tonight’s clash with the Washington Capitals, a run of form that sees the hosts improving to a 6-4-0 mark in their last ten games. Certainly, the Devils have good form going into this game, but it’s not enough to buy what they are selling in the face of the Conference standard.

The Devils are chasing a playoff spot, hoping to clinch one of a couple of wildcard spots in the East. As it is, they are six points adrift of the Philadelphia Flyers and eight points adrift of the NY Islanders, current occupants of the coveted playing cards but the pair have a game or two in hand, making the task before the Devils all that much more difficult. They simply must win out down the stretch.

The Devils were recently buoyed by a 3-0 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on the road, a second straight win after beating the Columbus Blue Jackets at home 2-1. At home the Devils are 17-15-4 on the season and riding a two-game winning streak with a win over Minnesota and Columbus. However, they are 5-5 SU in their last ten home games.

NHL Betting Verdict
Chasing a playoff spot provides the Devils with that extra incentive to win this game and turn the NHL odds in their favor – they are the severe underdogs anywhere from +155 to +165 on the NHL Odds board. In no uncertain terms, it’s a must-win game if they hope to keep applying the pressure on the Flyers and Islanders in the standings for the wildcard spots. Doing it at the expense of the Capitals does seem a bit of a tough ask, especially considering the Devils have lost three straight to the Capitals this season and appear to be on the verge of a series sweep, but, sometimes, during the final push of the season with playoff spots on the line results don’t always go to plan. The Capitals should win, but the Devils could win. That makes it a bit of a tossup on our NHL picks. Having said that we’re going with the Capitals as the road faves.
