The Islanders host the Stars at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, New York with a start time of 7:05 PM ET. Does this matchup look to offer us hockey bettors any solid value?

According to NHL betting odds the Islanders are a -120 money line home favorite and the posted total is 5.5. The road team has won 6 of the last 7 meetings between these two clubs. These teams have seen just 1 of their last 6 meetings go over the total.

Trying to Regroup

The New York Islanders are arguably the biggest disappointment in the Eastern Conference so far this season. They’re currently last in the 8-team Atlantic Division, and 15th overall in the Eastern Conference. This isn’t what was expected from a team that qualified for the playoffs a season ago, and gave the Pittsburgh penguins all they can handle in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals, before bowing out in 6-games. They recently went through a futile stretch in which they lost 10 in a row, and 13 of 14. However, they’ve shown signs of life in the last 2 weeks going 5-3 in their last 8-games. They last played on Saturday and suffered a 3-2 home loss at the hands of the Carolina Hurricanes. This will be the last of a 3-game home stand for the Islanders. Following tonight’s game they embark on a 6-game in 12-day road trip which begins tomorrow in Toronto.

A Pleasant Surprise

You have to give the Stars new head coach Lindy Ruff a lot of credit with the job he’s done thus far. There weren’t many experts if any that forecasted Dallas to be a potential playoff team in the Western Conference. Dallas is currently 9th overall in the West, and just 2-points behind both Minnesota and Phoenix, for the final playoff position. The Stars look like they hit the jackpot in the offseason trade with the Boston Bruins, where they received Tyler Seguin and Rich Peverley. Seguin is currently tied for 15th in the NHL scoring race with 41-points, and the 21-year old looks like a rejuvenated player. Peverley has also contributed with 6-goals and 13-assists, while appearing in 40 of the Stars 41-games, and averages better than 16 minutes of ice time per game. Dallas will look to snap a recent 2-game losing streak in tonight’s game. This is the first of a 3-game in 5-day road trip for the Stars.

NHL Betting System

Any home favorite playing in the month of January, versus an opponent coming off a home loss by 2-goals or more, has gone 43-10 (81.1%) versus the money line since the beginning of the 2009-2010 season. Using this syster, we believe that the best choice for our NHL picks is to back the Islanders as small favorites.
