If your New Year’s resolution is to win more cash from the bookies check out your Humble Handicapper’s top hockey picks for Ottawa vs. Tampa Bay.

The Sens are hot to trot at the minute and have seven wins from their last nine and won’t care one jot for the fact that they take their hockey to Tampa Bay, quite possibly because  the Lightning haven't won at home in over a month. The only real ray of hope for the Lightning is history and stats, if they were to lose on Thursday night it would be their sixth straight home ice defeat, something that they haven’t endured in five years.

Oh to be a Senator in January

Ottawa are 4-0-1 on the road this month and could post shutouts for three straight, which would be a first for them this term (but your Humble Handicapper doubts it). Still with all this good news Ottawa are still +2,000 to lift the Stanley Cup this year. And, for the record those Hockey Odds are a little better than the Canadiens’ but a fair bit worse than the LA Kings’.

Let’s not look to far ahead (as your Humble Handicapper’s crystal ball was cracked over Xmas) and look to the immediate opportunity to win big money from the sportsbooks.

The best hockey odds I can find on the straight up win / lose has Tampa Bay at -145 and Ottawa at +135. You may think that those odds won’t spin you much returns, and you’d be right.

Your humble handicapper is looking elsewhere as Mrs Richardson needs some new (and expensive) winter gloves to go with her new shoes.

All five of the Lightning’s recent home defeats have been by the same margin, A single solitary goal (including two one-goal losses in shootouts). If you think it’ll go six for six with the same margin (boring!) then you should take advantage of the best Hockey Odds on an Ottawa win (by one goal) which are offered up by the sportsbooks at +650, which means the bookies think it’s going to be tight. The bookies seem to reckon that Tampa Bay winning by a goal is more likely as that is offered up at +500.

What’s more the sportsbooks fancy two draws in terms of correct scores before anything else. 2-2 is at +1000 and 3-3 is at +1150. That means it is going to be close.

NHL Picks: Thursday Picks of the Day

Close, yes….but I see a winner.

Runs don’t last forever (good ones and bad ones) and I feel that Tampa Bay are just due a win at home. The Lightning are third in the Eastern Conference, and that doesn’t happen with just luck. They have the skills (to pay the bills) on the road and if they can just roll that form back home over the welcome mat we’ll see them win for our NHL picks.

NHL Picks: Tampa Bay win 3-2 available at the best Hockey Odds of +1750 with Bwin.
