On Tuesday, both teams will battle to improve their standings as time is ticking on their chances in this shortened season.
Record: 94-102 (-332)
The New York Rangers can win because…
They play well in this series, They’ve won 10 of the last 11 meetings between the teams while outscoring the Flyers 41-18. It’s pretty clear that the Rangers defense dictates the pace in these matchups while the Flyers scoring is nowhere to be found.
The Flyers are bumming around these days as they’ve lost six of their last eight. They’ve been unreliable all season long, so why bother backing them against a team that they continue to struggle against?
The Philadelphia Flyers can win because…
The Rangers struggling big time these days. Sure, the Flyers aren’t playing well but NHL odds makers aren’t exactly putting much faith in the Rangers these days either. The Rangers have lost five of seven, including an ugly home loss to the hapless Washington Capitals on Sunday. If you’re a team that loses to Washington at home, you’re a team that can lose to anyone in any situation.
The Rangers are just 5-8 on the road this year while the Flyers are 9-5 at home. Philadelphia is well below .500 on the season but at least they’ve posted a reasonable record at home. That’s worth something here.
Outlook & Pick
The goaltending matchup is what leads me to take the Rangers with my NHL picks. Henrik Lundqvist has a 1.63 GAA against the Flyers in his last 11 starts while Ilya Bryzgalov has a 3.70 GAA against the Rangers in his last eight. Take the Rangers.
Pick: Rangers -105 at Bovada
