Free NHL Picks - Pittsburgh Penguins vs Los Angeles Kings

Los Angeles Kings players celebrating

Thursday, November 3, 2016 6:12 PM GMT

The public is crushing the Pittsburgh Penguins tonight but that's not the correct side for our bankroll. Read why the Pens will receive a rude coronation.

2016-17 NHL Selection Record: 12-10  54.55%  +10.38 units

The record is average but through 22 games our bankroll is sparkling.

Last night we didn't get the win with the Ducks at home but that doesn't matter when you're playing a small percentage using 'house money'. A +117 underdog is worth the risk.

I hope that through a month you're starting to realize that the price of a game is more important than knowing the teams involved. We clearly have many options that involve teams that are much better than their opponent tonight, like the Washington Capitals at home against the Winnipeg Jets, but no matter how easy this looks we can't ever justify laying -235 just to get the Capitals. If the Caps lose this game you would have to win three games just to gain a thin profit. Not what responsible players do with their bankroll. We look for games that will give us the best return for our investment and sometimes that means taking some small chances with underdogs that give us a decent shot at a plus money return, hence the Ducks play last night.

Pittsburgh Penguins vs Los Angeles Kings

Tonight we walk over to Staples Center for our Thursday selection.

You can clearly see the difference between books as this line ranges from Los Angeles -105 to +109. To put that in perspective, if you play $100 on the Kings, you would receive nine more dollars back from one line to the next. Not a huge difference until you start getting in the thousand dollar range where you would receive almost $100 more because you took the time to shop for a line. It doesn't take much effort.

Sometimes a line will tell a story and this one certainly has a tale and tonight's Kings/Penguins match-up seems to fall in that category.

With all the injuries to the Los Angeles Kings, I expected this line to be in the -125 to -130 range but that's not the case. The Penguins opened a curious -110 which was quickly bet up to a consensus -120 but yet the bookmakers seem to have an opinion that screams bet the Pens.

I'm backing the Kings tonight for my NHL pick as Penguins starting netminder Marc-Andre Fleury doesn't have the greatest numbers against the Kings at Staples Center (2.73GAA, .908 save percentage). I expect Darryl Sutter's team to play 'old school' Kings hockey which means they need to raise their physical play which will raise the intensity level. That may be enough to take down Mike Sullivan's Penguins playing their second game in as many days.
