The Pittsburgh Penguins and Buffalo Sabres will engage in one of the biggest mismatches you can possibly witness in an NHL game. In short, there’s a 42-point gap between the Pens, who are first in the Eastern Conference and the Sabres, who are dead-last. How will this game shape up for our NHL picks?

The Pittsburgh Penguins Can Win Because…

This is an absolute layup. If this were college football, they’re Alabama and they’re playing Chattanooga. That’s how much of a mismatch this is.

The Sabres have lost nine of 11, which might seem like a rough stretch, but that’s really how they’ve played all season long. They only have 15 wins in 55 games; how could you possibly take them with your NHL picks here?

The Pens are the complete opposite. They’ve won 10 of 13 and have been on long winning streaks all season. They’re the only choice for your sports picks here.

The Buffalo Sabres Can Win Because….

The Pens have had some head-scratching road losses of late. They lost 3-1 in Phoenix on Saturday and the Coyotes have been one of the worst teams in the league over the last month. They also lost to Dallas on January 25th and Edmonton on January 10th. If they can lose in Edmonton, they’re vulnerable here too.

If the Pens were at home, this would be much closer to a sure thing. They are 23-4-0 in front of their home audience. However, the road game changes the dynamics here. They are only 16-13 when away.

Outlook & Pick

The Pens are a huge favorite on the NHL odds here and you do have to think twice about laying this type of juice given the hiccups they’ve had on the road, but they’re still the play. I’ll just take them on the puck line instead, so that we reduce some of that vig.
