Free NHL Picks for Oilers vs. Rangers

The Edmonton Oilers snapped a four-game losing streak in their latest outing but that doesn’t have many NHL betting cappers encouraged. Slightly edging the Buffalo Sabres isn’t exactly a signature win. The Oilers now head to New York to face the Rangers on Sunday.

The Edmonton Oilers Can Win Because…
They have played very well against the Eastern Conference this season. For whatever reason, the Oilers have been very teams from the East but have not fared so well against the West. They’ve won five of seven matchups versus East teams, including wins over quality teams like Washington and Montreal. Against the West, the Oilers are still winless (0-7).

The Rangers could be a tad worn down for this matchup as they played in Toronto on Saturday night. That game ended up going into overtime too. The Oilers should have a little more pep in their step for this one. And home-ice advantage might not mean much. The Rangers are just 4-2-2 at home (4-4).

The New York Rangers Can Win Because…
Edmonton is awful. Other than a brief home stretch where they won four straight, this has been a pathetic team. They started the season with five straight losses, getting outscored 25-11 in the process. Then they won the four games and again started a losing streak (four games) before managing to sneak out a win in Buffalo.

The Oilers are having a tough time scoring goals as they’ve totaled just nine in their last five games. Facing off with Henrik Lundqvist a solid Rangers defense while averaging so little figures to be a problem. Lundqvist had the night off on Saturday and he should be nice and fresh for Sunday.

Although the Rangers are laying a lot here, it makes sense because the Oilers are just a really bad team.

Outlook & Pick
This is a bit of a tricky game to handicap as the Rangers aren’t exactly elite but they’re laying a big number on the NHL odds here because the Oilers are so bad. Edmonton is dead last in the Western Conference – again – and they have just one win in six away games. That lone win came in Buffalo, who is one of the few teams in the NHL that’s actually worse than Edmonton.

The biggest challenge for the Oilers is that they give up a whopping 4.67 goals per game on the road. That number is good for the worst in the NHL this season. While the Rangers aren’t exactly a prolific scoring team (2.88 goals per game), they should be able to do enough to get past the Oilers.

I don’t like laying all of this juice, so I’ll recommend an under for your NHL picks. The Oilers are not scoring much and a tired Rangers team shouldn’t go too crazy in this spot. Look for this to be a 3-2 type of a result and the game to stay under the posted total.
