Wild fans are hoping playoff hockey is on the cards this season. Can the Wild take a step forward at the expense of Kings tonight? Find out as we preview this game and serve up your NHL picks.

Los Angeles
Although the Los Angeles Kings are coming off a 5-2 loss at Nashville on Monday, they’ve clinched a playoff berth behind their 44-23-5 mark on the season – a feat that takes some of the pressure off tonight’s clash with the Minnesota Wild. It’s worth noting the hosts aren’t so fortunate. Their playoff hopes hang in the balance of a late season push and a win over the Kings tonight would be a huge boost. However, it’s easier said than done.

The Kings are tough to beat and consensus betting polls support this notion with 62% of bets coming down the wire going towards the visitors. It’s a tight NHL odds market on this game to boot with the Kings trading as the notional underdogs, anywhere from +103 to -105 to win outright. The Wild, meanwhile, are trading anywhere from -110 to -115 to win outright in money line markets.

The Kings are 7-2-1 in their last ten games, a run of positive form that bodes well for their chances to come through for their backers. The Kings are notorious for strong finishes to a season, putting together a strong run of form that they ride into the playoffs. Last night’s defeat to Nashville was a hiccup, but it shouldn’t take anything away from the Kings. Prior to Monday’s date with the Predators, the Kings were on a tear with a 6-1 SU record that includes 5-1 win over Vancouver (home), 4-3 OT win over the lofty Washington Capitals (home), 5-0 win over Chicago (away), 5-2 win over Dallas (away), 4-3 OT win over NY Rangers 4-3 (home) and 2-1 win over Boston (home). Those are significant scalps over mostly playoff bound sides that can’t be overlooked.

Minnesota Wild
Minnesota Wild have strung together a two-game winning streak to improve to 6-3-1 mark in their last ten games. Crucially, they are coming off an upset over the defending Stanley Cup champions Chicago, defeating the Blackhawks 3-2 in a shootout in the windy city on Saturday. The win was a huge boost to their playoff hopes, not to mention their second win over Chicago this season after beating their lofty rivals 6-1 at home.

As it is, the Wild are 34-28-11 on the season with 79 points, a point adrift of Colorado Avalanche in the Wildcard standings. They boast a modest 18-13-4 mark at home, which includes a 3-2 shootout win over Carolina at the Xcel Center on Saturday and they’ve split the series with the Los Angeles Kings so far, losing 2-1 in OT in October and winning 3-0 in January (both were road games).

In their last meeting with the Kings in the regular season and with home-ice advantage, the Wild will be looking to clinch their third straight win and improve to a 2-1 head-to-head record over the Kings. They certainly have the momentum and the incentive to win, but inconsistencies on form that can’t be overlooked, especially a 4-6 SU mark in their last ten home games, could prove deciding.

NHL Betting Verdict
Los Angeles Kings are undoubtedly the better team and, as such, they practically leap off the page as the value NHL pick. This doesn’t mean the Wild can’t come through for their backers. They do have the incentive to win, which is an intangible that is hard to quantify. Yet, it’s not often a quality side such as the Kings is trading on underdog prices, of +105 at 5Dimes and Heritage, amongst several other sportsbooks, and it would be remiss of us not to tickle those and capitalize.
