Five puck drops feature on Friday’s hockey betting menu. We cast our eye on the clash between the Minnesota Wild and Detroit Red Wings and serve up choice NHL picks

Minnesota Wild (38-29-11)
The Minnesota Wild are coming off a loss and slip to a 7-2-1 record in their last ten games. It was a costly loss that snapped a six-game winning streak down the stretch and, crucially, prevented the Wild pulling significantly ahead of the Colorado Avalanche (a game in hand) in the race for a wildcard spot. That said, they still have a five-point edge over their nearest rivals and they’ll be looking to augment that edge with maximum points tonight.

Wild lost to the Senators 3-2 at home in Thursday’s jam-packed round of NHL betting. The eliminated Senators served up the surprising upset in NHL betting markets, by all accounts. However, it was only the Wild’s fifth loss in the month of March and just third home loss during the same period. It’s not really something to panic over.

Overall, the Wild have been playing exceptionally well and they have form going into this clash. So it’s likely they’ll be optimistic about their chances against the Red Wings. Indeed, a testament of their quality and threat is found on the NHL odds board where the Wild are trading as the notional road underdogs, split in the markets on odds ranging from -105 to +109.

In their last seven road games, the Wild are a solid 5-2 straight up with wins over Colorado, Chicago, Montreal, Buffalo and Toronto. Their only hiccups were to the Senators and the Devils during this stretch. On the season, they are 17-15-7 on the away.

Detroit Red Wings (38-28-11)
The Red Wings are in hot pursuit of a wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. As it is, they are just outside the frame, two points adrift of Philadelphia Flyers but with a win tonight offering the potential to leapfrog their rivals in the standings.

On Tuesday, the Red Wings lost to the eliminated Montreal Canadiens on the road 4-3, a loss that underscores their inconsistent form of late that stands on a 5-5-0 mark in their last ten games. Most concerning, though, is over the course of the month of March the Red Wings have been dropping points left and right. Eight losses in 14 games is hardly a ringing endorsement of their slightly favourable NHL odds for this pivotal clash with the Wild. You can find the Red Wings trading anywhere from -110 to -125 on the NHL odds boards.

In the last few laps around the league, they’ve been unable to string together a proper winning streak. The last winning streak was in mid-March when they beat Columbus and Florida in a row. The Red Wings have since oscillated between a win and a loss in their last six games.

That said, in their last six home games they are 4-2 straight up with wins over the Jets, Rangers, Canadiens and Sabres. It’s not a huge edge but, perhaps, that home form will prove the charm against the Wild. Overall, the Red Wings are a solid 20-13-6 at home.

Of all the games on today’s NHL betting slate, this might be the toughest to handicap considering the playoff implications riding for both teams. We’re giving the Red Wings the slight edge at home on our NHL picks to win outright at -115 at Bet365, despite the Wild’s undeniable form coming into this clash. Mainly the fact that the Wild are playing back-to-back games with no rest in between and fourth game since last Saturday takes the shine off the visitors.
