The Philadelphia Flyers and Boston Bruins will get their 2014-15 regular seasons underway on Wednesday night. The Bruins are a big favorite on the NHL odds but are they worth the price tag?

The Philadelphia Flyers Can Win Because…
They have been a different team under Craig Berube. Although they started 3-9-0 last season and were nothing short of a disaster, when Berube took over for Peter Laviollette, he managed to turn this team around. They proved to be one of the better Eastern Conference  foes in the latter stages of the season and made the playoffs. Goaltender Steve Mason set a career high with 33 wins and plugged the leak in net. Now if they can just carry that over and start well, they’ll be in good shape to climb even higher in the standings.

While the Bruins have the edge in net here, the Flyers have the edge on offense. They have a number of weapons who can pepper Tuukka Rask with shots and light the lamp. They’ll be a handful for the Bruins, who lost Jarome Iginla in the offseason and traded away defenseman Johnny Boychuk just this week.

The Boston Bruins Can Win Because…
They play well in this series. They won all three meetings last season and scored at least four games in each outing (15 in total). The Boston Bruins won’t lose if they’re scoring four goals a game. The issue for the Flyers is that the Bruins have no qualms getting into run-and-gun type of games because the Flyers defense can’t hold them under wraps while the Bruins can limit the Flyers scorers. But if this is a defensive showdown, only one team can really bring it: the Bruins. It’s just a tough matchup for Philadelphia.

The difference between the Bruins defense and Rask, compared to the Flyers defense and Mason is huge. The Bruins have won four of the last five in this series and that should be five of six after Wednesday.

Outlook & Pick
The Bruins opened at -195 on the NHL odds at Pinnacle but have dropped down to -179. It makes sense. The Bruins should be favored and will probably win the game, but the opening price was a bit high.

When making your NHL picks note laying this type of juice with the Bruins can’t be recommended – especially this early in the year. At the same time, the Flyers don’t fare well in this series, so they aren’t worth the bet. Take the over as we should see a high scoring game. It’s cashed three straight times in this series.
