The Winnipeg Jets begin a new era on Monday after canning head coach Claude Noel over the weekend. Paul Maurice now leads the Jets, who enter the day in last place in the in the Central Division.

The Phoenix Coyotes can win because…

They’ve played well against the Winnipeg/Atlanta franchise. They’ve won five of their last seven as the visitor in this series and 13 of the last 15 meetings overall.

Winnipeg has lost five straight because they’re not a very good team. They’ve allowed at least four goals in each contest while coughing up a total of 24 in the process. A head coaching change can motivate the team but it won’t improve their horrible defense and goaltending.

The Winnipeg Jets can win because…

The Coyotes have lost 10 of their last 14 games. Although the Jets just fired their coach, it’s not as if the Coyotes are in much better shape. They can’t buy a win these days and might soon be firing their own bench boss.

If you’re adding the Jets to your NHL picks on Monday, it’s because you believe that the coaching change will spark the club. They haven’t played well but this could be the catalyst to turn things around.

NHL Picks for Tampa Bay Lightning vs. Columbus Blue Jackets

Outlook & Pick

The NHL odds for this contest basically show a PICK. I’m inclined to take a shot with the Jets as a head coaching change might be exactly what they need. They’re not a great team but they are better than they’ve showed. Maurice is known for preaching fundamentals and he should infuse some into the sloppy Jets.

Phoenix has been awful of late as they’ve dropped 10 of 14. Their only wins have come against some of the league’s weakest opponents, like Calgary and Edmonton. I’ll add the Jets to my sports picks with the idea that the coaching change will be the key motivational factor.
