The Flames host the Coyotes on Wednesday at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada with the opening puck drop slated for 9:35 PM ET. Our handicapper tells you where you should be placing your money for your NHL picks.

According to NHL betting odds Phoenix is a -145 money line road favorite and the posted total is 5.5. The home team has won the last 7-games played between these two clubs. These teams have seen just 1 of their last 5 meetings stay under the total.

Beginning of a Home Stand

The Calgary Flames will be playing the 1st of a 5-game in 11-day home stand beginning tonight. The Flames would like to turn things around at home. Going into tonight they’ve earned 5-points less at home than they have on the road this season. The Flames are a miserable 7-17 versus the money line at the Scotiabank Saddledome this year. The Flames enter tonight having lost the last 4, 7 of the last 8, and 15 of their last 18-games overall.

Offensive Futility for the Flames

The Flames have scored 2-goals or less in the last 8, and 12 of their last 13-games. Adding insult to injury is the fact they were shutout in 5 of those previous 13-games. The Flames are next to last in the NHL averaging just 2.2 goals per game. Unfortunately they’ve not been much better defensively allowing 3.1 goals per game, and that ranks 28th out of 30 NHL teams in that specific category.

Coyote Tailspin

After winning 13 of their first 19, and earning at least 1-point in 16 of those 19-games, things have unraveled a bit for the Coyotes. They’ve gone a dismal 10-26 versus the money line in their last 36-games. The Coyotes enter tonight having lost 7 of the last 10, and 13 of their last 18-games. Despite the prolonged tailspin, the Coyotes are currently 9th overall in the Western Conference, just 4 points behind both Vancouver and Minnesota for the final playoff position.

Squandering an Opportunity

This will be the 1st of a 3-game in 5-day road trip for the Coyotes. Prior to tonight they’d played 9 of their previous 11-games at home. Unfortunately they weren’t able to take advantage of home ice going just 4-5 in those games. Following this 3-game road trip, they will have a chance for redemption, with their next 5 contests coming on home ice.

Final Analysis

Neither one of these teams is lighting the lamp with any regularity in recent weeks. The Coyotes have scored a total of 21-goals combined in their last 10-games. Calgary has scored a pathetic 16-goals total in their last 13-games, and has been held scoreless on 6 separate occasions over their last 17-games. My lean here for my NHL picks is to the low side of the total.

NHL Pick: Phoenix/Calgary to go under the total of 5.5
