Small schedule today but we have some value with the Calgary Flames at +135 plus is there any advantage to betting the NHL when football dominates the card.

Today is a tough day in the NHL prediction business because we try not to put early games up so you have time to bet our picks so that only leaves us with three options and two of them are too high of a price to get involved with. That means we're staring at the Calgary Flames at the Detroit Redwings. This is not normally a game I would get involved with because the goaltending in Detroit is such a mess. They want Petr Mrazek to take the job from Jimmy Howard but that hasn't happened and now we see Howard getting more playing time. Too volatile of a situation for me but they pay me to give opinions. More on this game in a bit.

We know it's a heavy football day but how does that equate to NHL betting, at least for today.

Does it mean the lines are soft because the bookmaker's attention is elsewhere? Let's look at today's lines and see if the lines seem out of whack with what they would normally be.

When you read this the Washington Capitals and Columbus Blue Jackets will have already faced off but to make the Caps a -200 favorite over the Jackets is the books clearly hoping you will take the underdog. At this point, these two squads are not that far apart. I would have made the line -160. It seems they put up a -200 line because of perception rather than reality.

Calgary Flames vs Detroit Red Wings

The biggest question mark comes from our official play.  When the dust settles this season the Detroit Redwings will not make the playoffs as predicted in our futures column, in fact, they may end up being one of the worst teams in the league.  So for them to be a -155 favorite against anyone is an oversight even against Calgary. This clearly another perception line with Detroit being the most public of the two teams.

Are the lines soft?  I would say that there isn't as much thought put into getting a 'sharp' line as there would be other days as we see the standard -150 with the home team on today's card with the exception of the Blue Jackets who haven't earned the respect of the 'squares'.

The public seems to be on the Wings at home as expected.  I can't back a team that couldn't conjure up an inspired effort against the Washington Capitals so how can I justify that I'll see a better effort today? Detroit has won just two of their last 10 games since starting the season 6-2. It looks like Thomas Vanek will return for the home team which, as usual, will cause an overreaction. Let's get some underdog money tonight with the 'house money' that we've accumulated.
