The Ottawa Senators take on the Carolina Hurricanes in Tuesday’s round of NHL action. Here’s a breakdown of the matchup complete with NHL picks for your hockey betting thrills.

Ottawa Senators (31-29-7)
The Senators are coming off a loss to the Dallas Stars at home on Sunday. Although the Senators got off to a bright start, the Stars rallied and went on to clinch the road win 2-1, handing the Senators their third loss in the last four games.

The Senators will be looking to bounce back tonight when they descend on the Carolina Hurricanes, put their recent spate of poor results behind them. In the last ten games, they are a solid 6-3-1, which includes wins in three of their last four away games. In fact, the Senators are riding a two-game winning streak on the road with wins over Calgary and Toronto, outscoring the pair 9-6.

On the season, the Senators are just a modest 31-29-7, which includes a 17-12-5 at home and 14-17-2 on the road. Clearly, road form hasn’t been up to snuff and, as a result, any hopes of a playoff spot are fading fast. They are currently six points adrift of a wildcard spot and trading as the nominal underdogs to clinch the road win in Carolina, anywhere from +110 to +120 NHL odds at online sportsbooks.

Carolina Hurricanes (29-26-11)
The Carolina Hurricanes are coming off a loss, which sees them slip to a paltry 4-5-1 in their last ten games. Although they are level on points with Ottawa Senators in the race for a playoff spot, their form doesn’t bode well at all towards that aim. Indeed, they must turn things around and quickly. The season is hurtling along, waiting for no one.

Hurricanes were defeated by the Tampa Bay Lightning in Saturday’s away clash 4-3 in overtime. It marked their fourth loss in the last five games and sixth in the last nine games. In fact, the Hurricanes haven’t been able to string together any kind of momentum since a back-to-back winning streak in mid-February, when they beat the Islanders 6-3 and the Jets 2-1, both at home.

It’s hard to get a handle on the Hurricanes: sometimes they punch above their weight class – wins over the Islanders, Sharks and Chicago over the last month or so spring to mind. On other occasions, they simply fall short of expectations. In spite of this lack of consistency, odds makers do send the Canes into this game as the home faves anywhere from-125 to -135 on the NHL odds board.

The Hurricanes take a 29-26-11 mark into tonight’s clash, which includes a solid enough 16-12-6 mark at home. Current form is nothing to write home about, but the premium on the win in this game couldn’t be any greater and with home advantage the Canes must feel they have a shot.

NHL Betting Verdict
On the whole, very little separates this pair on the season. They are neck-and-neck in the wildcard playoff race, but six points adrift of the nearest spot currently occupied by the Detroit Red Wings. The premium on the win here and pivotal points couldn’t be any greater. Home advantage tips the balance towards the Canes in NHL betting markets, but the Senators do have the better form overall in recent weeks. As a result, we’re shading the road underdogs on our NHL picks.
