The Carolina Hurricanes (27-23-10 64 pts) and the Philadelphia Flyers (26-21-11 63 pts) are meeting to determine the 10th spot in the Eastern Conference. Who will be our NHL pick tonight?

Flyers vs. Hurricanes
This is a double revenge spot for the Carolina Hurricanes who have lost the first three games of the series, all in overtime, to the Flyers this season. In two of the three losses the Hurricanes outshot and out played the Flyers but just came up short.  Despite the recent string of defeats the Hurricanes have beaten the Flyers 6 of the last 10 meetings and have outshot Philadelphia in 7 of the last 10.

The problem with the Flyers is it never appears Dave Hakstol has the team prepared. In the first period the Flyers give up just under 11 shots on goal. Then you would think they would make significant progress in the second period after some Hakstol adjustments but they give up just over 10 shots in the second, a period where they also give up (0.86) goals. Combined only Ottawa gives up more shots per game.

The Flyers injuries have piled up.  Claude Giroux, who did not play Tuesday with a upper body injury, is not expected to play. To the Flyers he is their captain and their leader. His loss is like losing a starting quarterback. He leads the Flyers with 49 points in 57 games. There are some reports that he could see some playing time in this one so watch morning line combinations to be sure. We'll have an update on our video preview.

Sean Couturier, a second line center, was just upgraded to day to day by General Manager Ron Hextall. He is expected to see some playing time in this one. Couturier has 16 points in his last 16 games but has missed nine straight games with a lower body injury.

These injuries on top of the loss of Michael Del Zotto who is out for the year after wrist surgery. Even goaltender, Steve Mason, was shaken up Saturday but is the listed goaltender tonight. Check morning skate to be sure. Mason has been dealing with cramps has given up three goals in four of his last five starts.

My rule has always been to go against teams who have returning players from injuries or just make a big trade. I've always felt it takes a couple games for their lines to gel again plus you get tremendous value betting the other side because the public can't help but to back the team who just made a big move or has a high profile player coming back. Let's check the latest trends and NHL odds first.

The Hurricanes haven't suffered back to back losses since the third of December.

Jordan Stall now has 23 points in his last 20 games and at least a point in five straight games.

Hurricanes Jeff Skinner had a hat trick in the recent meeting, a 4-3 OT loss.

The Flyers are just 21-46 in their last 67 road games and 17-39 against teams with a losing record. Take Carolina as your NHL pick tonight.
