As tends to be the case in any sport, teams tend to be flat when returning from a long road trip, and that’s just what will happen Wednesday in Denver as the Lightning will strike early and often in the first game back home for the Avalanche after a four-game roadie.

Raise your hand if you had the Colorado Avalanche returning home to Denver after a four-game road trip, in which they went 3-0-1, tied for first place in the Central Division! Yeah, didn’t think many hands would be raised after Colorado didn’t exactly enter this season as “Stanley Cup Contenders” at +4000, but the Avalanche have been rolling and now come home at +2000 over at BetOnline.

Colorado also is 6-3 against the spread and 2-1 at home, so one might think they’re the logical play here against the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning who are 5-2 against the spread and 1-1 on the road, but this game reeks of a letdown or come back to earth game for the upstart Av’s against a team many have raising Lord Stanley come June, or at least playing for it. After entering the season at +850, you can now get the Bolts at +900. They will play like contenders against a team they owned last season going 2-0-0 and outscoring 11-7 and snap the three-game win streak of the Av’s.

The Lightning are in the midst of a five-game road trip and are 1-0-1 so far on the trip, beating the Blackhawks 6-3 in Chicago in their last game. Tampa Bay has outscored their opponents 28-18 and is 3-4-0 on the over/under and 2-0-0 on the road. The Lightning is 4-3 on the puck line and 1-1 on the road.

Brayden Point (5g, 3a), Yanni Gourde (4g, 4a) and JT Miller (2g, 6 a) are all tied for the team lead in points with 8. Point leads in goals and Miller in assists. 2018 Norris Trophy winner Victor Hedman has provided the offense from the blue line, leading all Lightning defensemen with 2 goals and 2 assists.

The Avalanche have surprised plenty with their offense this season, outscoring their opponents 33-20. They’re 4-5-0 on the over/under and 1-2-0 at home. The Av’s are 6-3 on the puck line and 2-1 at home. Colorado is 2-0-1 at the Pepsi Center this season.

Forward Mikko Rantanen leads the team in points with 16 and assists with 12 helpers. 2018 Hart Trophy finalist Nathan MacKinnon and captain Gabriel Landeskog are tied for the team lead in goals with eight lamplighters each. Erik Johnson leads all defenseman with four assists and four points.
