In this article, pro capper Dana Lane explains why the oddsmakers are begging you to bet the Stars at such a small price and NHL betting trends that are already taking shape.

2016-17 NHL Record:  1-2  33.33% +0.36 units

It's only three days into the season but it's apparent that betting favorites overall has been profitable. Through 16 games the favorite has won 12 times with home favorites winning 11 of 15 games.  The good news for underdog bettors is even though the numbers look overwhelming, it hasn't been easy. Road dogs getting +1.5 are 10-4 71.3% so plus money bettors going to have their day soon.

We identified the Oilers last night as a solid play enabling us to put a little more on the game (2 units) but not too much where the bankroll would take a major hit with a loss. The problem with betting favorites is you literally could bet a -150 favorite five games, win three of the five, and have nothing to show for it.

The market will catch up and inflate these numbers forcing equal action.

Even with 'totals' there's a huge trend as 10 of 13 games that didn't end in a 'push' went 'over'. This is a matter of oddsmakers being too tied up with football to notice that perhaps it's time to rethink the standard 5 or 5.5 number they throw up.  There are some in the industry that say that 6.5 could become the norm in the new fast paced NHL.

Our second dog we're going to play today is the Colorado Avalanche who are one of the last team to start the new season. The public has annihilated the opening number of -105 each way, driving it up to -130 at BetDSI.  Almost 75% of all bets are not only on the Stars to win but cover the -1.5 goals.

Of course we know that oddsmakers are not stupid people as they know that the public will be all over the high octane Stars and sure enough that is happening.  The books have clearly taken a side on this game and it isn't on Lindy Ruff's team.

I know the exhibition season doesn't necessarily mean regular season success but after watching the Avalanche play live this preseason I'm convinced that they may be one of the teams I would look to early on as an under the radar team, especially as an underdog at home.

New Head Coach, Jared Bednar,  seems to have his team playing a looser style than they did with Patrick Roy.  His style is more conducive to where the league is headed.

Colorado has had the Stars number over the last 14 meetings as they own an 11-2-1 record. For my free NHL pick, I suggest we get at least one of these 'dogs tonight and make more profit.
