Other than one contest, today's NHL odds contain a number of teams that are unlikely to reach the postseason. This requires a little more drill down action to hopefully dig up the right choice.

Having won three consecutive days with our NHL picks, we are feeling more confident about our chances to come up with a top trio for today. One of our losses yesterday was with Dallas and it brought up yet again why the Stars just do not have the right makeup to reach the Stanley Cup Finals. Dallas gave up six goals in Arizona in the final two periods of 6-3 setback and the utter lack of defense was full display, permitting 42 shots to a team ranked 29th in attempts this season. This unacceptable for what should be elite club.

Here is what we have on tap against the NHL odds.

Don't Bet Against San Jose on the Road
After an outlandish three-game stretch in which San Jose's defense allowed six, zero and six goals, the Sharks defense has settled down in winning three in a row, permitting four scores. San Jose (31-25 SU) is now within three points of laboring Los Angeles in the Pacific Division for first place, with Anaheim between them.

The Sharks have opened five-game road trip in style, with impressive victories over Florida and Tampa Bay last evening and plays third time in four days at Carolina (25-32 SU). Those triumph's moved San Jose to 20-8-2 on the road, second only to Washington away from home. "No doubt, (on) the road, we're just committed to a pretty disciplined game," said Joe Pavelski.

After winning seven of 10 from Jan. 8 to 26, the Hurricanes have dropped four of seven, including at Ottawa Thursday 4-2. Carolina is a middling defensive team which has to play well most nights to cover up for 24th rated offense. The Hurricanes have won five of seven over San Jose in Raleigh, but are 16-36 versus winning clubs.

Columbus Rides Smokin' Goaltender
No, Joonas Korpisalo is not a 5-star recruit that Urban Meyer signed for Ohio State that all of Columbus needs to know about, but those living in Ohio's largest city should be aware of him. The rookie goaltender has 1.76 goals-against average of late, which has propelled the Blue Jackets (23-35 SU) to 4-0-2 stretch and they have looked like a real hockey team. Though Buffalo has the exact same record as Columbus, oddsmakers have taken notice. The Jackets were released as -145 home favorites, which is their largest such figure since Dec. 2 against Florida, when their money line was -165.

The Sabres have won six of nine, but failed Tuesday for a seventh straight time to have a winning streak reach three, having done so once all year, back in November.

Columbus has given up only 11 regulation goals in their last half dozen contests and will try and contain faltering Buffalo power play which is 3 for 23 and send them to 0-15 on the road after a division loss.

Islanders Squeeze by Devils
The National Hockey League is only major sport which has found a way to reward a certain type of losing that helps take the sting out of defeat. Consider it a trip to get ice cream after losing. Last night the New York Islanders (30-26 SU) fell to Washington 3-2 in OT, but at least coach Jack Capuano can sell his squad on the fact they picked up a point in the standings before traveling to New Jersey (29-29 SU).

The Devils have the NHL's best defense according to the numbers at 2.24 goals allowed, with goalie Corey Schneider second in the league in goals-against at 2.04. New Jersey's problem is they cannot score, averaging only 2.21 GAG and that is magnified in 5-on-5 hockey, where they tally the fewest goals be a decided margin.

New York has been established as -115 road favorite and being a younger team, they are 5-3 with no rest. The Devils have lost past two to Isles and they are 15-34 playing into double revenge.
