It's a slow day in the middle of the week and when looking at the NHL odds boards and matchups, thought we would change it up for today with a different outlook at each contest.

With just four games to choose from and the fact I have already written a complete article on San Jose and Colorado here, I will tell you why to bet against three teams today. By now your humble handicapper should be a trusted adviser coming second perfect day in less than a week and having won seven of the past eight days I have posted NHL picks.

Today is not necessarily as easy given the fewer choices, but there is still plenty not to like about three clubs against the NHL odds boards.

Buffalo Great Play Against Team
If there is one game that explains how different Buffalo (24-36 SU) and Anaheim (31-27 SU) are compared to when they met on Dec. 17, that is the one. On that night, both teams came into that contest scuffling and looking for solutions for a season that was going awry and that was mostly expected to happen for the Sabres, but not so for the Ducks, the defending Pacific Division champs.

Anaheim was last in scoring at the time as was shutout 4-0 in Buffalo. Since that encounter, Buffalo has gone on with 10-17 SU mark, while the Ducks figured out what they needed and are 20-8 since that painful evening.

Buffalo is up to a +220 road underdog because there defense is unlikely to hold up against one of the hottest offenses in league right now and face one of the finest special teams in the NHL which will provide them no quarter. The Sabres are 0-7 if their opponent just scored five or more goals and they are 10-41 against winning teams of late.

Montreal's Misery Continues in Washington
A season which began with such promise is swirling down the porcelain commode for Montreal (28-32 SU). The Canadiens 9-0 start at this point feels like it was from a different decade, not from last October. A quick usage of math tell all of us Montreal is 19-32 SU since that sensational opening act and their 14th ranked offense would be further down list as would their 18th ranked defense.

The Canadiens fans and probably many of its players believed they would be having the kind of season Washington is 44-14 SU. Montreal thought they would be stacked with weapons of mass destruction to reign terror on opposing goaltenders and its defense would as impregnable as the latest Apple iPhone.

Even perennial All-Star P.K. Subban is being called out by his head coach when he has suffered lapses this season. Washington latest sizzling streak has them at 9-1, while the +190 road underdog Habs are 4-14 having lost three of their last four games this season.

Boston at Home is Hazardous to Wagering Accounts
With Boston goalie Tuukka Rask and his Boston (32-28 SU) teammates 10-1-1 in latest games with Pittsburgh (30-28 SU), one would imagine the Bruins would larger than -115 home favorites. However, that is not the case and for good reason.

Boston is 12-18 SU at TD Garden, once a safe haven for the Bruins, now a house of horrors. In the B's last two home games they have surrendered nine goals to Los Angeles and on Monday fell 6-4 to punchless Columbus. That is 15 goals allowed which, still has Boston fans wondering why their team traded away defensemen in the offseason and not made any deals since to bring in fresh faces.

The Bruins are the worst home defensive team in hockey at 3.37 goals allowed and are being outscored by 0.6 GAG, which is the poorest differential of any home team in the NHL.

Pittsburgh should feel better about playing Boston on the road, while the B's are 4-11 off a home loss by two goals or more the last two seasons.
