Back to basics when reviewing the NHL odds for a Hump Day. With only three games, this is kind of like having three choices in the closet and trying to figure out which order to wear what you have.

Last evening had some different results but nothing like what they had in Boston. Los Angeles ended up beating the Bruins by the score of 9-2. It was a complete team effort for the Kings, as nine different players scored, which was the fourth time this has happened in the last 20 years. L.A. was as relentless as Boston was passive, registering 57 shots on two Bruins goaltenders and they were 3 for 3 on the power play.

Rare non-winning day for us, just the sixth in past 24, as we roll out our NHL picks for Wednesday.

Detroit's Defense Stifles Ottawa
After allowing 15 goals over four games, the last three on road, Detroit (27-26 SU) has buttoned-up that end of the ice in last two home victories, permitting one goal in the process. This evening in the middle contest of the five-game homestand the Red Wings look to chill and a piping hot Ottawa (25-29 SU) offense, which has tallied 18 goals in their past four outings.

The NHL odds opened with Detroit as -165 home favorites and they take on a Senators squad that has won four of five at Joe Louis Arena. For the Red Wings to extend their winning streak to three, they have to apply excessive pressure to Ottawa netminder Craig Anderson, who has had a yo-yo season and is 0-4 SU with a 3.9 goals-against average versus Detroit of late. The Sens will likely see Petr Mrazek in net and he has won nine of 12 and owns a 1.18 GAA with a .955 save percentage in his last 11 outings.

Rangers Mask Special Teams Weakness in Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh (27-25 SU) players seemed to have adjusted to in-season coaching change to Mike Sullivan and have won six of seven in the process. In particular, Sidney Crosby is back to his old self and is on a six-game tear in which he's amassed 10 goals and six assists. The Penguins have opened as -140 home faves over the New York Rangers (30-23 SU) , who are starting to play like they did early in the season in winning three straight and seven of 10.

New York would appear to be at a disadvantage, having lost star Rick Nash and in the throes of a putrid period of special teams in which the power play is 2 for 49 in previous 17 games and they 25th in penalty killing. Contrast this with Pittsburgh, who is 10th in man advantage scoring chances and sixth in penalty kills.

However, despite these weaknesses, the Rangers are second only to Washington when they game is played at even strength at +30 goal differential. Additionally, they have won won seven of 10 in the Steel City and have given up only three scores in 22 power play chances to Pittsburgh since the start of 2014-15 season, including the playoffs.

Coyotes Howl in Victory over Vancouver
After being in second place a good chunk of the season, the once surprising Arizona (24-28 SU) club has tumbled into a fourth place tie with tonight's opponent Vancouver (21-32 SU) at 54 points. The Coyotes have dropped eight of 10 and those early season defensive woes have returned, surrendering 21 goals in losing their last four tilts, leaving them last again in defense at 3.10 GAG allowed.

In that stretch, Arizona ran into solid offenses like Chicago and Los Angeles and lately Winnipeg and Anaheim have been scoring more. No real excuses, as the backend for Coyotes has been lousy all season, but they might catch break tonight facing the Canucks, who are 26th in scoring at only 2.32 GAG.

Vancouver did end four-game losing streak at Colorado last night with 3-1 triumph, but is 1-7 after a victory by two or more goals this season. Not close to favorite play of the day, but will back Yotes at -125.
