The Calgary Flames were thrashed 6-1 in Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals. Can they find a way to bounce back and cash on the NHL betting lines for Game 2?

The Calgary Flames Can Win Because…
They are going to play much better in Game 2. Sure, they were shell-shocked in Game 1 but one game does not make a series. They were coming off a very emotional series win when they came from behind in Game 6 to stun their rivals, the Vancouver Canucks. It’s fair to say that they simply had a letdown and didn’t play with the same type of intensity. Calgary only had 24 shots (compared to the Ducks 35), they had more penalty minutes than Anaheim, less takeaways and less faceoff wins. They were absolutely horrendous in terms of marking the Ducks stars as Patrick Maroon was left unchecked in front of the net for the Ducks second goal while Corey Perry walked in front of the Flames net unchecked for the third goal. The Flames are better than that and they won’t let that type of sloppy play happen again.

While the Flames goaltenders gave up six goals, they were hung out to dry. Look for the Flames to play much better in front of them and give their team a chance to win.

The Anaheim Ducks Can Win Because…
They steamrolled the Flames in Game 1 and nothing is likely to change in Game 2. They scored a whopping six goals along with two on the power play. They chased Jonas Hiller after he gave up three goals on 14 shots but the problem for Calgary is that Karri Ramo didn’t make a difference. He also gave up three goals (on 21 shots). Normally, the Flames hope to see a spark when they change goaltenders – as they did in Round 1 – but that simply didn’t happen in Game 1 here. There was absolutely no difference whatsoever.

Even if the Flames play better in Game 2, it’s not as if Game 1 was close. There’s a chance Calgary does play more efficiently but they simply had no answers. It’s not likely that things change for Game 2. They still have issues in net, which is why NHL odds makers placed them as underdogs for this game. They still don’t play well on the Duck Pond and there’s still no Mark Giordano, who is their captain and best defenseman. This is a tough spot for Calgary, so that’s why the Ducks are the better choice for your NHL picks.

Outlook
Calgary was awful in Game 1 and they should be a little better in Game 2. While it doesn’t mean that they’ll score better in Game 2, it does mean that they should be a bit better defensively in front of their goaltenders. That being the case, I’ll go with the under. The under is 18-6 when the Flames are on the road with a total of 5.5 and it’s 20-10 when the Ducks are at home with that number. Go under with your NHL picks  in this one.
