Pittsburgh (37-25-4, 78 points, +15 goal differential) hosts the Calgary Flames (32-25-9, 73, -10) tonight in a game that opened on the NHL odds board with the Penguins -180 favorites and the total at 6.5/Over -125. The public jumped on the Flames plus price on the road, driving the number down to its current -170. The public bet the "under" early with the total still at 6.5, but shaded to the "under" now (-107) at Pinnacle.

In their first meeting this season, in early November in Calgary, the Penguins lost 2-1 as -150 favorites. The "over" was never threatened, as neither team scored until the third period. Pittsburgh goaltender Tristan Jarry had 32 saves in the loss, and Mike Smith won it for Calgary.

The Penguins have earned backers +29 units when wagering on the moneyline, +214 units on the goal-line. The "over" is 35-29-2 overall and 18-14-1 at home.

Flames money-line bettors have lost -696 units this season, -1042 on the puck-line. The "under" is 33-31-2 overall and 17-16 on the road.

Top 10 Power Rankings: Pittsburgh No. 1; Calgary NR

Key Statistics: Pittsburgh 3.23 goals per game (fifth); Calgary 228 power-play chances, 3.46 per game (third)

All-Time Series: Pittsburgh leads 44-43-18 overall and 28-13-10 at home

Series This Decade: Pittsburgh leads 7-5 overall and 3-2 at home

The probable goalie matchup tonight is Jarry (11-5-2, .913, 2.68) against David Rittich (6-5-3, .900, 3.11). Glen Gulutzan’s Flames are four points behind Los Angeles for the final wild-card spot in the West.

Seven of Calgary's past 11 games has found their way "over" the total, but not because the Flames have been good offensively or bad defensively. It's because there is no consistency on a nightly basis. That makes it hard to bet on from a side perspective but very easy if you’re getting involved with the total. You can anticipate the Flames potentially scoring five goals like they did against the Avalanche and Coyotes recently or giving up eight total goals, the streak they’re on now. They recently went six straight games with a power-play goal, but now they’ve failed to score on 14 consecutive attempts.

The Penguins are always a good "over" bet because of the pace they force the opposition to play. Even with the Flames being in an offensive slump, you can bet they will get plenty of chances tonight in transition.

With your NHL picks, bet the "over" to cash another ticket.
