The Anaheim Ducks home dominance over the Calgary will be on display but it’s the ‘total’ that has piqued Champion Handicapper Dana Lane’s interest.

Calgary Flames vs Anaheim Ducks

The opening night of the 2017 playoffs handed me a ‘push’ on our first play but I suppose it’s better than a loss. Tonight our focus is on what should be one of the most physical first round match-ups between the Calgary Flames and Anaheim Ducks.

As expected the public and professionals are ponded the ‘under’ with 62% of all tickets written supporting this to be a tight, hard checking affair.

The problem is that even games that feature some bad blood can display plenty of scoring. The Ducks are still burning about a knee to knee hit that cost them Cam Fowler for 2-6 weeks. They may want to send an early message potentially leading to a few power plays that could aid our selection. Losing defensemen the quality of Fowler makes the Ducks weaker on the blue line even though their depth will help them through the Fowler loss.

Brian Elliot will start in goal for Calgary against John Gibson for the Ducks, Gibson was lifted after the first two games of the 2016 postseason in last year's postseason.   It will be interesting to see if Gibson can be more of a force early on this year.

A couple points about this series that stick out.

This is the first postseason appearance for the Flames since 2014 where they were eliminated by the Ducks in the second round.  The Flames have had issues beating the Ducks everywhere but especially when they are at the Honda Center where they’ve dropped 27 straight games.  Overall the Ducks have beaten Calgary four of their five meetings this season.  In the Flames four losses, they gave up 14 goals with their only victory coming on December, 8-3.

Using five as our measuring stick, the Flames and Ducks have gone over the total 11 times with 4 pushes in their last 18 meetings. At the Honda Center the ‘over’ is 11-4-1 in their last 16 meetings.
