If going after the betting odds in hockey ends up being anything like last night, another wild ride is in store. Five of the six games went beyond regulation, which was incredible and painful.

As I have often expressed here, me and OT in sports are not chums. In having rare losing day, two of the three contests went against us and is the case with money line, overtime is essentially a coin flip and I and now 16-29 here. I digress and move ahead to today and admit this is a pretty stiff card, with not a lot of choices with Boston a big favorite at home despite so-so record and Detroit far from trustworthy for picks. Here is what I have lined up against the NHL odds today.

San Jose Takes Advantage of Playing at Home
San Jose (37-29 SU) knew the start after the All-Star break was not going to be easy, playing nine 12 away from home. The Sharks being a determined road club, ended up winning eight times in all. Now the odds lines predict positive results now that they will be home the next three contests, which will see fantastic since they have not played consecutive home games in over a month.

However, the Shark Tank has not been kind to San Jose at only 12-17 SU this season. But they are taking on a New Jersey (31-36 SU) club that is struggling in all areas. In losing eight of 10, the Devils defense has completely broken down, permitting four goals a game and offensively, they have not been able to generate many answers, with 10 goals in dropping five of six. With New Jersey big underdogs, they are 2-12 in road games after allowing six goals or more since 1996, making the Sharks the part of the main NHL picks this time.

Minnesota Adds to Edmonton's Road Woes
Having lost 4-2 to St. Louis at home Sunday, Minnesota (31-36 SU) will attempt to prevent another streak. That setback ended a four-game win streak for the Wild, who since Jan 21st have been quite good or very bad, with positive and negative runs. With three road games on tap, there are two points waiting to be had by Minnesota if the they put in the work.

Edmonton (26-43 SU) is just a bad squad and though they have won four of six, this looks and feels like an aberration. The Oilers special teams have not been doing their part, with one goal on the power play in last 24 tries. Trying to solve Wild goalie Devan Dubnyk, who used to play for Edmonton, will not be easy as he is 6-1 with a 1.28 goals-against average against his former club.

Off their 3-0 loss to San Jose, the Oilers are 0-13 in road games after scoring one goal or less in their previous outing this season.

Goalies Beware in Montreal
Both Buffalo and Montreal would have to get on blistering rolls to make the postseason and that seems unlikely given their recent play.

For the Sabres, the glass has been half empty and half full, which of course it would be, yet it explains their offense and defense. Buffalo has scored 14 goals and allowed 13 in past four outings which is old adage of "giveth and taketh away."

The Canadiens offense has seen an uptick at 2.85 goals a game in their last seven, while the defense continues to scuffle at 3.6 goals allowed in last dozen trips to the rink.

Though the history of this series lends itself to lower scoring contests, the way these two are playing, one would have to beg to differ. With the oddsmakers total set at five, Buffalo is 23-11 over in road games when the total is five or less the last two seasons.Having lost 6-4 back on Feb 12th to the Sabres, Montreal is 10-2 over revenging a loss of two goals or more this season.
