After taking a day off the ice, back at it on Tuesday. I will admit the NHL odds look very spot on today and instead I will seek the best value for sports picks on the ice.

Sometimes you have to give the oddsmakers their due in setting NHL odds and this is one of those days. This hockey handicapper has gotten off to a good start at 13-5, +5.25 units the past six days. Here is what I believe offers the best value today and why.

Can Columbus Finally Win a Game?
Columbus is off their worst start in franchise history at 0-6. Only 13 teams in NHL history have started so poorly and the field drops to five for those who have ever began 0-7. It has not been like the Blue Jackets have really been competitive either, being outscored 30-13. What is perplexing about this is Columbus finished last season on an incredible roll by winning 15 of 17 and you would think there would be carry over.

So why in the world would I look at Wagerweb odds of the Blue Jackets at +120 and think they could finally win? Columbus begins a four-game road trip on Thursday, thus, likely not many great opportunities on that front. This should mean an all-out effort at home. This is the New York Islanders only game over a five day period and they might well be stale and not exactly wired to face a team playing as bad as Columbus. Lastly, the Jackets have a history, they are 9-2-1 at home against the Isles. As crazy as it sounds, I will take Columbus for NHL picks.

NHL Pick : Blue Jackets -135 at 5Dimes

Philadelphia Goes to 3-0 on Home Ice
The Flyers have not played since last Wednesday and take on one of the fastest teams in the league, who excels in the visiting sweaters in Dallas. Philadelphia is a modest home underdog, which is reasonable because a team like the Stars can be flying around the ice in the first period and score twice before Philly is even accustomed their surroundings.

In this case, I see Philadelphia doing whatever they can to slow the pace down, and with the way their defense has played in last two home games, this is possible. The Flyers have shutout Florida (1-0) and Chicago (3-0) and done so by taking away the opposing teams rushes up the middle of the ice. This will be imperative against Dallas who can send in players like Tyler Seguin, Jamie Benn, Patrick Sharp and Jason Spezza.

If Philadelphia survives the first period, and I think they will, they are 10-1 at home after two or more Under's since season and solve the Stars goaltender for a 3-2 victory.

NHL Pick: Flyers -114 at Heritage

Blues Hand Montreal First Setback
As offbeat as the last two choices might appear, this one finishes it off. Montreal has been the best team in the NHL and is off to its best start ever at 6-0. The Canadiens have not won seven straight in a decade. Montreal has not scored fewer than three goals in any contest and their defense has stopped last 14 power plays by the opposition and their goalie is Carey Price, who is only the reigning Hart and Vezina Trophy winner, who has a 1.20 goals against average and .957 save percentage in five games.

Yet if the Canadiens are the best, St. Louis is not far behind at 5-1. This is the end of six-game road trip for the Blues and like tonight's opponent, they have won their past four away outings thanks to a smoking hot offense which has four goals in each of the last four contests. The Blues can matchup in terms of style and is 10-3 in road games against good passing teams averaging five or more assists per contest since last season and has won seven off last 11 at the Bell Centre.

NHL Pick: Blues +131 at Pinnacle
