Today's NHL odds have no less than five favorites of at least -200 on the money line. While some underdog players will go all in and take all five seeking the pot of gold, I will not.

Hockey is not like baseball for money line betting, you see far fewer large favorite lose in the NHL during the regular season because of the talent gaps and you don't have a pitcher who for reasons unknown, could just have a bad day. While the same could be true of a goalie who would be the person most similar to a starting pitcher, a top goaltender still stops better than nine of 10 shots, while a pitcher for the most part has a finite number of batters he can strikeout, thus having less control of the outcome.

For NHL picks, I am not advocating taking all five chalk favorites, as Nashville and Detroit gives me some concerns at home, as does Anaheim on the road. Instead, I prefer three other faves and completely realize I essentially have to go 3-0 to extend daily winning streak to six and I believe I have the right trio of choices to defeat the NHL odds this day.

Pittsburgh Continues to Simmer
At first glance, Pittsburgh (40-32 SU) looks to be overvalued. The Penguins have won six in a row and 10 of 13 and are only four points behind the New York Rangers for second place in the Metropolitan Division. Though it might be true Pitt might be a little overvalued, they are facing New Jersey's third string netminder Scott Wedgewood, who is making his second start. With Cory Schneider injured and his backup Keith Kincaid struggling (13 goals allowed in his last three starts), coach John Hynes has turned to Wedgewood. The Devils (35-38 SU) postseason hopes are fading fast in losing 10 of 16.

Pittsburgh at -270 is not for everyone, but they are 12-1 playing against a team with a losing record in the second half of the season.

San Jose Does Not Overlook Edmonton
San Jose (41-32 SU) realized this was a very important homestand, with six games and real chance to gain ground in the Western Conference and their division. After taking the first two contests, they were shutout by St. Louis 1-0. The Sharks had the chances with a 37-24 shots edge and were unable to score with an extended 5 on 3 power play.

With Dallas and Los Angeles the next two home encounters after Edmonton (29-47 SU) tonight, San Jose players have expressed they know what lies ahead and cannot have off-night. The Sharks have not had many against the Oilers at the SAP Center in regulation with a 7-0-2 record as hosts the past five seasons. San Jose is a -240 heavy favorite and is tied for the third-best offense in the league and Edmonton is 6-37 in road games against offensive teams scoring 2.85 or more goals a game the last three seasons.

Los Angeles Finishes Road Trip with Winner
With a chance to extend their lead in the Pacific, Los Angeles (44-29 SU) has come up short on the first two legs of three-game road excursion. Having lost at Nashville and Minnesota, the Kings are out to salvage one game as they meet Winnipeg (30-43 SU).

The Los Angeles players have been pounding the net with shots, but have only five goals to show for it in their last three outings. The Jets have not been any better, with only five scores over four contests, though the last was 2-0 shutout of Vancouver. With 2016 almost three months in, Winnipeg has yet to win consecutive home games this new year, having failed on four previous occasions and they are just 5-15 SU at the MTS Centre this year. With the Jets 1-10 after playing a game where three or fewer total goals were scored this season, the Kings at -165 feels like a winner.
