Twelve big choices from the sportsbooks today to attempt to secure winners against the betting odds. Nice to be able to choose from a large litter to make sports picks for hockey.

Actually started with six games and after careful considerations cut it to three and really want to go 3-0 today to keep string going of three consecutive winning weeks for NHL Picks going. Here is what I have.

Vancouver Flipped to Favorite in Ottawa
WagerWeb opened Ottawa as -125 home favorite, but by mid-morning today, Vancouver was the betting choice against the NHL Odds at -115. This might go back and forth, but here is why backing the Canucks is a good choice.

Vancouver (7-9 SU) is 1-1-1 on current road and 5-3 SU on the season in the away sweaters, but only one of those losses has come in regulation, signifying how well they are doing on the road. Give coach Willie Desjardins credit for making a lineup change and pairing Jannik Hansen, with the Sedin twins, Henrik and Daniel. This has ignited the Canucks offense, which is now up to 7th in the league at 2.94 goals a game. Another important, but often overlooked factor is when Vancouver is playing 5-on-5, they are tied for the second most goals in the NHL at 39.

This last point could be very important against Ottawa (7-8 SU), who is having problems finishing games and has blown third period leads six times already this season. The issue is two-fold, the lack of aggressiveness on offense playing too conservatively and inability of defensemen to consistently clear the puck.

With Vancouver 18-6 in the first half of the season against losing teams since last year, that is where I am going.

Add Them Up in Big D
Dallas is second in the league in scoring (3.50) and Winnipeg is 10th (2.81). The Stars feature the NHL's highest-scoring duo in Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn, who have combined to 19 goals and 44 points on the year. The Jets have a terrific two-some of their own in Blake Wheeler and Bryan Little, who have assembled 35 points, which is the third-best combo on ice.

Since Dec. of 2013, in the past seven contests between these clubs, five times the OVER has been the right pick by hockey handicappers. Being more offensive, both teams will have defensive lapses and we have seen more that from each club in their last six to eight outings.

This right off the top has me leading towards a higher score, when I discovered Dallas is 23-9 OVER facing opponent who converts on 19 percent of higher on power plays and Winnipeg is marvelous 10-0 OVER after allowing five goals or more, like they did in 5-3 loss at Minnesota on Tuesday. I'll go past the 5.5.

Kings Continue Mastery of Islanders
After winning seven in a row, Los Angeles has cooled like the weather in losing three of five, but would seem to have the right recipe to get back on winning track.

The Kings have alternated losses and wins, the last a 3-2 setback versus Arizona on home ice two nights ago. Spotty defense has been L.A.'s downfall, with 10 goals allowed in those defeats. Next up is the New York Islanders (8-8 SU), who began their quick tour of California (three games in four nights) with a 4-2 win over San Jose on Tuesday.

However, the Islanders have not matched up well with the more physical Kings, with a 1-9-2 record in last nine years, including a 0-4-1 mark at visitors. Not certain at this time who will be in net for New York but Jaroslav Halak is 1-7-2 with a 3.05 goals against average, including 0-3-1 with a 3.71 mark on the road and his backup Thomas Greiss is 0-3, in also surrendering over three goals a contest. Contrast this the Kings Jonathan Quick who is 5-1-2 with a 1.59 GAA figure against the Islanders ( 2-0-1, 0.65 GAA at home) and you can understand why Los Angeles at -145 is appealing.
