Time to look at the NHL odds on the ice for Tuesday. Have to admit, one of the more interesting cards I have seen lately, with some real thought having to be put into my plays.

Top teams like Dallas and Washington would appear to easy choices for NHL picks, but both have been a little off their game of late and are on the road facing teams which should have better records than they presently do. Is Pittsburgh finally starting to turn season around? We find out tonight when they host Chicago and this is another contest which could go either way against the NHL odds, thus I will pass.

Instead, a trio of other games that make more sense to me, and I will now explain why.

Columbus Bags Another Winner
This happens in sports frequently, yet when it occurs, it makes people stand up and take notice. Columbus (15-25 SU) had just lost 11 of 14 games and had two home games with the best two clubs in the NHL in Dallas and Washington. Prospects were definitely not bright for taking on those two powerhouses, yet somehow the Blue Jackets knocked off both goliaths and have to be brimming with confidence.

This could be a very great opportunity for Columbus today, taking on Minnesota (20-18 SU). The Blue Jackets might be +120 home underdogs but they are facing a Wild team which has not been playing all that wild of late at 3-5 SU and is dismal 6-12 SU on the road. The Blue Jackets also have a solid history of success against Minnesota, with a 16-7-1 home record against them. The Wild can be tamed as 1-8 road record off a road game proves.

Florida Wins One More Time
Been picking up cash backing Florida (23-16 SU), as the Panthers have really been on the prowl with nine consecutive victories and taking 15 of past 18. Florida begins a six-game road trek and they almost certainly will lose, but I do not believe it will be in Buffalo (15-24 SU) tonight. Here are the reasons why.

Florida has won eight of nine versus the Sabres, with only loss coming in OT. At the First Niagara Center, they are 6-0-2 in their past eight meetings, which should only enhance their confidence. One player for the Panthers who will feel virtually unbeatable is goalie Roberto Luongo. The netminder has a streak of three consecutive shutouts at Buffalo. He has a 1.62 goal-against average in last eight starts versus the Sabres (7-1 record) and right now he's in the zone with a 1.26 GAA, winning seven starts in a row.

With Buffalo having lost unlucky 13 straight January games, Florida at -140 is inviting.

Montreal Picking Up the Pieces
After struggling mightily, the Canadiens will try and close out eight-game road trip on a positive note. Montreal (22-18 SU) was horrific 3-11 SU in December, but a 4-3 win at Tampa Bay on Dec.28 broke a six-game losing streak and they kicked off the new year in style by pummeling Boston 5-1 in the Winter Classic.

This could be the beginning of the return to form for the Canadiens, who were never as good as team that began season 9-0, nor as dreadful as they played last month. Montreal might be catching Philadelphia (15-22 SU) at the right moment, as the Flyers were swept on three-game west road swing.

Philadelphia is actually a -115 home favorite because they 5-0 at home off a road loss this season and not everyone is convinced the Habs are truly out of their deep slump. Nevertheless, I do mind taking the team which should be favored, since they have more talent and are 7-0 off a road win by two goals or more this season.
