When I started on the research for this articles to generate NHL picks from the NHL odds the sportsbooks sent out, a happy smile came across my face going through the numbers.

Though I had another perfect winning day, we as human beings also like choices and I really liked today's card.

I ended with three choices as my top plays, but if you happen to like New Jersey and the New York Rangers, I would not blame you since they were on my short list. The same was true of Dallas, but at -230 on the money line against a Calgary club which has won six in a row, that is not an enticing prospect for NHL picks.

The NHL odds you will read about are from SBR's odds.

St. Louis Better of Slumping Teams
Since opening the season 11-3-1, the Blues (18-14 SU) have been singing the blues at 7-10. No particular area has been terrible for St. Louis, they just have not been able to put it all together, with breakdowns too often in various elements. The Blues have been trading wins and losses in their past six contests and after their 4-3 win over Winnipeg Tuesday, they have not consecutive games since Nov. 4-10.

Nashville's (15-16 SU) 7-2 start to the season has also long been forgotten, with just four wins in last 14 outings. Part of the Predators conundrum has been late game and OT ineffectiveness. Nashville has lost six straight in OT, which also translates in not being clutch in the last five minutes of regulation either.

If you have been reading this for anytime, you know this hockey handicapper follows individual team dominance and St. Louis is 13-4 in last 17 with Nashville (6-2 on home ice), which is why I will lay the -135.

Chicago Not Happy After Shutout Loss
The past three Blackhawks games have all seen one team shutout. On Tuesday, that was Chicago (17-15 SU), crushed by Colorado 3-0, which also ended Patrick Kane's historic 26-game point streak. That left the Blackhawks at 12-5 SU at the United Center and they definitely want to put that behind them and start building a new streak.

They appear to have the right opponent to do so in Edmonton (14-18 SU), whom they are 9-1 against, including 3-0 of late. The Oilers six-game winning streak was interrupted by the New York Rangers on Tuesday in 4-2 setback, but they felt playing back to back night on the road was as important in their loss as the Rangers were.

Edmonton lost to the Hawks 4-3 nearly a month ago (Nov.18th) and they are paltry 6-24 playing with revenge off a one-goal loss. Chicago on the other hand is 16-3 after a defeat by three or more goals and I will hand out the -210.

Colorado Cools the Islanders
Since the day before Thanksgiving, the New York Islanders (18-14 SU) and have won eight of 11. The Islanders have been steadily moving up in the league scoring chart, now 11th at 2.72 goals a game. New York has put this fine record together be being air tight in penalty killing, with one goal allowed in 24 chances and they are up to fourth in the NHL in this category at 86.3 percent success rate.

Colorado (15-17 SU) has also been playing a fine brand of hockey, winning eight of 12 and closing in on .500. The Avalanche are the fourth-best scoring home team at 3.07 GAG and have really made a defensive commitment since the last time they faced the Islanders and lost 5-3. In the eight succeeding contests, the Avs have given up just 13 goals and goalie Semyon Varlamov is hotter than a Breckenridge ski resort hot tub, with 1.16 goals-against average in his last six starts (5-1 record). I'll snag the +105 with the home underdog against the Isles who are 10-17 off a pair of home games.
