The last weekend of February is here and it is getting to be crunch time in the NHL for playoff positioning. NHL odds makers understand this and are beginning to alter the betting odds accordingly.

Today, three of the five games will feature heavy chalk favorites starting at -260 on top teams facing inferior opponents. This could offer value on the puck line, however, that is an individual decision and would only recommend if this is something you wager on regularly, which I do not.

Pulled off another winning day Thursday, taking the latest winning streak to seven of nine days and when checking out the latest NHL odds, like our chances to help you make it eight of 10.

Anaheim Ambushes Edmonton
Sometimes in life, you just need a break, which can give you a fresh perspective, a different way of looking at something. This week reports have emerged from various Anaheim Ducks (32-27 SU) websites that several players said the four-day Christmas break did them wonders. After being one game from reaching the Stanley Cup Finals last year, Anaheim was lacking its usual offensive mindset and there was off-ice issues, which recently have come to light, that was reportedly causing problems in the locker room.

After that 12-21 SU start, Anaheim is 20-4-2 since the holidays. The Ducks offense has gone from last in scoring to 20th in the league and is still climbing with Ryan Kesler (21 points in 23 games) and Ryan Getzlaf (17 points in 13 games) leading the charge. Anaheim is a big -260 favorite over Edmonton (22-40 SU), who has lost six straight and is 1-13-2 in prior 16 matchups with the Ducks. For NHL picks, Anaheim is top choice.

Washington Reboots in Win Over Minnesota
Though Washington (44-15 SU) is clearly the best team in the league to this point, they are not perfect, nor should they be. The Capitals players realize this and after losing on home ice to Montreal on Wednesday, they went on the record saying they have to return to playing with purpose for all three periods.

Though Washington has won four of past six contests, in each of those the opponent has scored first, which was like a wakeup call in the victories. In the losses to Dallas and the Canadiens, they dug even bigger holes and came back to make it a one goal outcome. However, Capitals aspirations are not to be competitive, they are about winning and allowing 3.1 goals a game like they have in last seven is not a winning formula.

Minnesota (27-34 SU) won four in a row after coaching change, but has returned to previous lack of offense with three total goals in past two losses. This is room service opponent for Washington and as a huge home favorite, they should handily move to 39-17 against losing teams.

New Jersey Trumps Tampa Bay
Never one to stray too far away from favorites when betting regular season hockey, I do find occasional underdogs in certain spots that make sense. Frankly, this pick doesn't make sense on the surface, but hear me out.

Tampa Bay (34-26 SU) has won four in a row and is within five points of tying Florida for first place in the Atlantic. New Jersey (30-32 SU) has dumped four of five and its defense has been abhorrent in giving up 19 goals in this stretch. Then why in the devil would the Devils be thought of as a play at +120?

New Jersey has not been one of the Lightning's favorite stops, having been on the losing end of 12 of 15 as visitors. As bad as the Devils played in 6-1 thrashing at Columbus yesterday, they are 10-5 off a road loss, and digging deeper, is 6-1 if it was a division encounter. Finally, New Jersey has shown gumption having lost four of five with a 6-1 mark in next outing.
