It is the last day of hockey before holiday break and the sportsbooks have given us betting NHL odds on the 10 contests on the docket which we can breakdown to make today's NHL picks.

Yesterday was trend-breaking day, with the New York Islanders and Pittsburgh busting out and scoring five times in their victories. After playing great defensive hockey, Colorado fell apart and the league's second-hottest goalie Semyon Varlamov did not have it, allowing six goals on only 21 Toronto shots in 7-4 home loss.

For this evening, I have three new NHL picks and some food for thought. St. Louis is at Boston and the Blues have beaten the Bruins 12 of last 16 games. Of these 16 contests, nine went beyond regulation and St. Louis won each of them. Crazy, right!

New York Rangers Finally Get It Right
Last season New York (19-16 SU) was among the top defensive teams in the NHL and they started this season even better in allowing just 1.75 goals a game, bursting out of the gate like American Pharoah with 16-3-2 record. Then something changed, goalie Henrik Lundqvist had a couple shaky outings and the Rangers became tentative on defense. All the sudden the New York defense was like a sieve and have given up 3.71 GAG in dropping 11 of 14.

The right anecdote might be at Madison Square Garden to help the Blueshirts in the form of Anaheim (12-20 SU). The Ducks are last in the league in scoring at 1.84 GAG, which sure sounds like a terrific opportunity for New York. The NHL odds from Heritage have the Rangers at -150 on the money line and this hockey handicappers finds them at 10-1 off three or more consecutive losses.

Tampa Bay Offense Finding their Way?
The Lightning have played like a team with a massive Stanley Cup loser hangover all season. Last season's top scoring team, who often was a blur going up and down the ice, has skated like they had double-blade skates, ranked in the lower 25 percent of the league in scoring most of the year.

Tampa Bay (17-17 SU) might be finding its mojo with 13 goals in their past three outings and looks to continue to lighting the lamp against Vancouver (12-23 SU). In looking at the Canucks record, looking into stats to find answers, it is all in the numbers, ranking in the bottom third in every important statistic which relates to failure or achievement this season.

Given the Lightning's pedestrian record, seeing them as -185 home favorite is bit unsettling, but oddsmakers understand when Tampa Bay's offense begins to flow, they are tough to beat and they are 24-6 on home ice after one or more Over's.

Play the Total in Big D
Chicago has won seven of nine and defense has led to their success. The Blackhawks have permitted only 15 goals in this span and registered three shutouts with its air tight defense. That could change tonight being involved with the league's top scoring in Dallas.

The Stars have plenty stars which helps them tally 3.50 goals a game and they have few fears in playing in shootouts, knowing they have scorers and depth to come out on top more often than not.

Why I like OVER here is not only Dallas ability to score, but the fact Chicago is giving up 3.2 GAG on the road, showing their defensive vulnerability away from home. The Blackhawks might not have the depth they did in winning three Stanley Cups, but still has star power of their own with players like Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews and Duncan Keith, plus emerging scorer Artemi Panarin, who is second in points on the Hawks with 31.

Linemakers are hard-pressed to make any total a six unless something really warrants it, but I have no problem betting the OVER in what should the most entertaining contest of the night.
