We have a massive slate of eleven NHL games today and there are a plethora of betting opportunities. The question is, how will we cull the herd? How will we find the winner? Well, worry not my degenerate friends. We have done the work and we have found the spots to target. Let’s do the thing.
Detroit Red Wings vs. Chicago Blackhawks
Sunday, January 24, 2021 – 12:30 PM EST at United Center
All credit to the Blackhawks, they got a win against Detroit in the first game of this matchup, They needed it desperately and they got it. They deserve that. This is a different story.
Chicago is a team with a defense like a colander. It has holes everywhere, though it may not be reflected on the NHL lines. They got by in game one against the Red Wings because Detroit is not a particularly potent offense, but the truth is still the truth. Chicago cannot play any resemblance of quality defense. This is a major problem.
The Detroit Red Wings are not a good team. They are not even an average team. However, they do play hard. They scrap. This is more than can be said of them a year ago. They will play hard, and in the previous two series they’ve had, against better teams than Chicago, they have managed splits. I do not see a reason to doubt they will do the same here in game two against the Blackhawks. I will take the plus money value on the Red Wings and run with it.
Vegas Golden Knights vs. Arizona Coyotes
Sunday, January 24, 2021 - 04:00 PM EST at Gila River Arena
This has been an interesting couple of games between Vegas and Arizona thus far. Vegas throttled Arizona in the first game and followed that up with a loss in the second by a 5-2 margin. Now we have the rubber match.
Arizona is a very middle of the road team this season. They are not spectacular offensively or defensively, nor are they particularly lacking in those areas. They are above average in goaltending, but their mediocrity elsewhere does not get ameliorated by the talent in net. They took one against Vegas, which in a three game set was likely to happen.
The Golden Knights are an exceptionally talented offensive team, which can play better defense than they are given credit for, particularly when considering that their style of play lends itself to scoring chances for their opponents. Having said that, Vegas is simply the better team in this matchup. Off their first loss of the year I expect them to come back motivated and looking for a revenge situation.
I am not willing to lay the juice on the moneyline here, so I will bet the Vegas offense is firing on all cylinders on Sunday and will cover the puckline. In terms of sports betting, the Vegas Golden Knights are currently one of the top betting choices to win the 2021 Stanley Cup according to NHL Futures.
NHL Pick: Vegas -1.5 (+165) at Bovada
New York Rangers vs. Pittsburgh Penguins
Sunday, January 24, 2021 - 07:00 PM EST at PPG Paints Arena
We made this exact bet in the first game between the Rangers and Penguins and it worked out to our advantage. I see no reason to deviate from it in game two.
The Rangers are a sketchy defensive squad. The consistency simply is not there. Offensively, they have immense talent. They can find the back of the net when they need to, but they will also allow their fair share of goals.
Pittsburgh is much the same as the Rangers, they have proven offensive talent, but their defense is not what it was during their Stanley Cup runs of the previous decade. The Penguins also have the problem of sub-par goaltending. This is a recipe for one bet and one bet only at betting sites.
I believe these teams are very closely matched and will play a tight game, however, the one thing I do feel confident in is that we will see goals. Plenty of goals. I will once again ride that trend to the over in the second game between these two teams.
NHL Pick: Over 6.5 (-125) at Bovada
