The weekend begins right after work for many (not hockey handicappers) today, which if you are typical employee, this afternoon you can check out the NHL odds for tonight's action.

Last night a number of teams continued lengthy streaks with the New York Rangers over Arizona, Dallas winning on the road and Columbus losing for an eighth straight time. The NHL odds have Montreal as big road favorites to extend they franchise-best winning streak to eight, but I will pass with goalie Carey Price expected to rest. Instead I have three other choices and look to improve on this week's NHL picks.

Bumbling Bruins Surprise Again
After being the best home team in the NHL the last three years, Boston is off to its worst start on home ice in 50 years. The Bruins head south to play in the Barclays Center for the first time against their new inhabitants, the New York Islanders. The Bruins two victories have both come on the road and they will need to be much be stiffer on defense and in goal.

Boston blew a 4-2 lead at TD Garden in losing 5-4 to Philadelphia in OT Wednesday. In the Bruins first six games, they have allowed at least three goals and 2014 Vezina Trophy winner Tuukka Rask has a disastrous 4.40 goals against average and an .854 save percentage, which is next to last in the league.

With everything the Bruins are doing wrong, why would I use them for sports picks at Wagerweb.ag? Boston is better than what they have played at home and Rask is 8-3-0 with a 2.34 GAA in 12 starts against the Islanders. Also, New York has won four in a row and that fifth victory is often elusive for them at 9-28. Seems risky, but the B's again step up on the road.

NHL Pick: Bruins +140 at 5Dimes

Edmonton Extends Streak at Washington's Expense
I have been betting against Edmonton and failing and while not convinced this is playoff team, this young squad is playing with more fervor. The Oilers penalty killing in particular has been tremendous, best in the league at 92 percent, but will face a still challenge from Washington's No.3 ranked power play.

I might have passed on this contest, but with Capitals netminder Brandon Holtby expected to sit this one out, the Oilers should have a few more chances against backup Philipp Grubauer, who is 7-6-5 in 20 career games, with 2.44 GGA.

Washington comes into this road game on a four-game winning stretch, yet they are only 5-13 having won four of five and they have not performed well in Edmonton for years in posting a 2-9 record. I'll back the small home underdog.

NHLPick: Oilers +105 at Heritage

Kings Crown Carolina
Los Angeles like Boston had a terrible opening start to the season, losing three home games, being outscored 12-2. The Kings went back to basics, focusing on defense and dumping the puck in their own end, working the boards to create shots and wear down the opposition. This strategy has given them three consecutive wins, allowing just one goal in each contest while scoring eight themselves.

Los Angeles opened as -190 money line home favorites versus Carolina, who is coming off their best defensive showing of the season, a 1-0 shutout at Colorado. After being poor between the pipes, goalie Cam Ward was terrific, but no official word has been sent out from the Hurricanes if Ward or Eddie Lack will be in goal.

Both teams have been lackluster in the power play (bottom 20 percent), but the Kings have enjoyed more success at the Staples Center and is 6-1-1 in Carolina's past seven visits and has won four in a row. With Los Angeles playing back to norm and the better team anyways on home ice, I'll back them.

NHL Pick: Kings -175 at Bookmaker
