Short list of NHL betting odds in hockey on Hump Day with just a trio of games. Since I am writing about one other contest in longer form here, a totals play will be part of the NHL Picks for tonight.

It was thought yesterday would be a crazy day in the NHL and many of the results played out that way and it affected the standings. Florida had a very winnable game against the worst team in the East, Toronto, and they got smoked 5-2 and they remained tied with Tampa Bay for first place in the Metropolitan, instead of taking the lead. Boston and Detroit had road games they should have won but did not and they are hanging by a thread in the playoff chase with recent play.

The Minnesota Wild are very close securing playoff bid after sweeping season series with their nemesis Chicago and the Blackhawks Duncan Keith is facing lengthy suspension after hitting Minnesota player in the head with his stick.

About the only aspect that went according to form was St. Louis and Dallas, the point leaders in the Western Conference and Central Division, as both won.

Here is what we have for NHL picks for today.

Anaheim Snuffs Out Flames Again
After losing six of eight, Anaheim (42-33 SU) has returned to winning ways with a couple of victories and can reclaim lead of the Pacific with a W. The combination of poor defense and playing on the road was taking a toll on the Ducks. Now Anaheim opens a four-game homestand in which they want to maximize their points potential, before heading out on the road for final three contests of the season.

The NHL odds have the Ducks as -260 favorites against Calgary (32-44 SU), which one could argue is actually low given the circumstances. The Flames are 12-25 SU on the road this season and the last time they won in Anaheim, the top song was "Yeah!" by Usher, with help from Lil Jon and Ludacris. That is correct, Jan. of 2004 was time Calgary left Anaheim victorious, which is 22 regular season plus a pair of playoffs games ago. While the Flames will eventually win, it does not look like tonight.

More Desperate Flyers Win at Home
Philadelphia (37-38 SU) is tied with Detroit for the last playoff position in the East with 87 points, but are in more advantageous spot, having played two fewer games and they need to secure points to take the lead over the Red Wings.

Washington (54-21 SU) wrapped up the President's Cup with 4-1 victory over Columbus, however, the celebration was muted, because all the Capitals players that were on the team six years ago told those that were not, this proved nothing in their minds when they ended up losing in the first round of the playoffs. This is tricky contest from mental perspective for coach Barry Trotz, wanting his team to stay mentally sharp but also wanting to rest or get certain players healthier. Also, the Caps really do not want to give the Flyers any confidence, since they could be meeting in the first round of the Stanley Cup.

Washington opened as a -120 road favorite on NHL Odds, but Philly really needs the victory and has won four of last six over Washington on home ice and squeaks out a victory.

More Low Scoring in Winnipeg Despite Defenses
Winnipeg and Ottawa are 24th and 28th respectively in goals allowed this season, which plays into why both were out of any postseason discussion some time ago. Does this mean we could be looking at an Over play on the total tonight, not necessarily.

Oddmakers have the total at 5.5, which relates to their defensive efforts, yet not the offense. In losing their past three contests, Ottawa has only six goals while Winnipeg has found the back of the net only 13 times in dropping five of their past seven outings.

In these squads last three gatherings, the total was exactly the same and each time the contest ended in an UNDER. With this being the Jets third game in five days, we find them 27-11 UNDER when this occurs, which is good enough for us to support.
